<p>Do you know where to find shark-eating monkeys, the collective noun for lobsters, or the seaweed that’s really an animal? As everyone heads off to the beach, here are 21 facts that’ll make your kids think about the seashore in a different way. None of them are fishy.</p><p><br></p><h2 data-header-link="Facts About Beach Animals">Facts About Beach Animals</h2><p>1. Jellyfish, starfish, cuttlefish, crayfish and shellfish are all poorly named. None of these are fish, nor remotely related to fish. (And some would argue that there’s actually no such thing as fish at a genetic level. It’s a catch-all term for a widely varied group of animals.)&nbsp;</p><p>2. Do an image search for ‘greater horn wrack’. If you live around the northern Atlantic (USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, etc.) you may have seen colonies of this seaweed in the shallows. Only, it isn’t seaweed. <em>Flustra foliacea</em>, to give it the Latin name, is actually bryozoa - part of the animal kingdom, despite looking and smelling like seaweed!</p><p>3. Speaking of which, seaweed is not a plant, as often assumed, but an algae. Seaweed and other algae are responsible for most of the oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere. Thank the oceans for letting you breathe.</p><p>4. Crabs are famous for walking sideways. Many, however, can also walk forwards and backwards, though the sideways scuttle is usually preferred.</p><p>5. Head to a beach in southern Africa and you might see a startling sight: monkeys that eat sharks! Chacma baboons have been known to patrol the shallows in search of ‘mermaid’s purses’, in other words, shark eggs, which they then devour.</p><p>6. The barnacle is named after the barnacle goose, and not the other way round. In medieval times, people believed that the birds hatched from the shelled creatures we now call barnacles.&nbsp;</p><p>7. On a related note, barnacles are often assumed to be molluscs, like clams, limpets and mussels. They are more properly defined as crustaceans, though, and so have more in common with lobsters and shrimp.</p><p>8. Some collective nouns for you. A gulp of cormorants; a cast of crabs; a pod of dolphins; a herd of dugong; a bed of eels (or oysters); a colony of gulls; an army of herring; a bloom of jellyfish; a deceit of lapwings; a risk of lobsters; a consortium of octopuses; a fling of sandpipers; a herd of seals; a shiver of sharks; a bale of turtles.</p><p>9. Now for a fictional beach fact. In the film Jaws, the seaside resort of Amity Island is terrorised by a great white shark. The toothy menace is not seen properly until the 77th minute, and only gets a couple of minutes’ screen time in the whole film. The paucity is partly down to Spielberg’s masterful ratcheting of suspense, but the truth is that the film-makers encountered numerous technical problems with the shark model. Hence, it was rarely seen.</p><p>10. Partly thanks to Jaws, young children often get a bit nervous of sharks when paddling in the sea. Yet the real killer of the oceans is the jellyfish. About 20 times as many people die from jellyfish stings as from shark attacks. It’s still very rare though!</p><p>11. You may have read that fish were the first creatures to leave the ocean and venture onto beaches in search of food, eventually evolving into amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals… and humans. The second bit is true, but fish were not the first to leave the ocean. The insects were already there, having evolved from centipede-like creatures that crawled out of the sea 155 million years before the fish gave it a go.</p><p>12. Since then, fish have travelled much further. The first fish in space was a mummichog, which launched in 1973 to the US Skylab space station. Have you ever stopped to think about what causes high and low tides? It’s both simple and complex. In basic terms, the oceans of the Earth feel a gravitational attraction to the moon and move accordingly. But the pattern of high and low tide is complicated. You don’t always see high tide when the moon is directly overhead. The rise and fall is affected by many factors, including varying ocean depth, the presence of land masses, and the fact that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. And then there’s the sun...</p><p>14. We’d still have tides, even if the moon suddenly disappeared. The sun also contributes to the rise and fall of sea level, though only about 46% as much as the much-closer moon.</p><p>15. Most seas are partly or wholly surrounded by land - think of the Mediterranean or Caribbean, for example. The one exception is the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic. It has no land around its edges, but is instead defined by a circular current called the North Atlantic Gyre.</p><h2 data-header-link="Facts About Beaches">Facts About Beaches</h2><p>16. Have you ever wondered where all that sand came from? Most of it is the remains of rock that has eroded over many years into fine grains, usually of quartz.&nbsp;</p><p>17. Tropical islands often lack sources of quartz. Their beaches are covered in a whiter sand derived from coral and the shells and skeletons of the animals that live there. Those tropical beaches may look beautiful, but you’re lying on the remains of millions of animals!</p><p>18. The world’s tallest sandcastle was built in Denmark in 2021. Looking somewhat like the Disney fairytale castle, this epic construction measured over 21 metres tall and used 5,000 tonnes of sand. For comparison, the Tower of London reaches 27 metres.</p><p>19. The <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/around-the-world-in-16-sports">first recorded game of beach volleyball</a> took place in Hawaii in 1915. It’s one of two Olympic sports first documented on the islands, the other being surfing.</p><p>20. The world’s busiest beach is thought to be Fujiazhuang in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian. In peak season, some 40,000 people cram into a stretch just 500 metres long.</p><p>21. The longest pleasure pier in the world can be found at Southend in England. Any attempt to rank them, or present a comprehensive list is doomed to failure. Instead, we decided to pick out 13 from around the world that are particularly geared up for families.&nbsp;</p><p>In some cases, these are relatively small parks with a particular theme that will appeal to kids. Other examples highlight larger, well-known parks that are among the best in their region for family entertainment. Dubbed ‘the Eastern Jurassic Park’, the venue contains some of the most astounding dinosaur models on the planet, not to mention the futuristic architecture of the central complex. With numerous dinosaur-themed rides and museums showing off China’s renowned dinosaur fossils, this is a monster of a theme park.</p><h2 data-header-link="4. Efteling (Netherlands)">4. Efteling (Netherlands)</h2><p>The largest theme park in the Netherlands has its share of white-knuckle rides, but its biggest draw is the focus on myths, legends and folklore. The park has its origins back in 1952 (three years before Disneyland), when it opened as a fairy tail trail designed by the famous Dutch illustrator Anton Pieck. Efteling has since expanded to become one of the largest in Europe but has stayed true to its original values. IMG Worlds of Adventure - the city’s most notable actual theme park - is a sprawling, temperature-controlled indoor venue built for the family audience. Its fun-packed zones include an animatronic dinosaur experience, attractions inspired by Cartoon Network and a huge space devoted to Marvel superheroes.&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="6. Legoland Billund (Denmark)">6. Legoland Billund (Denmark)</h2><p>The Legoland chain of parks now extends to over a dozen locations around the world, but the original opened in 1968 beside the Lego factory in Billund. Its nine themed areas include the Knight’s Kingdom, a Western-themed land, a Mini Land of replica landmarks, and Duplo Land for the smaller children. A recent addition is Ninjago Land, drawing on the popularity of the toy line and TV show. As with other Legoland parks, you can expect a mix of thrilling rides, shows, inspiring Lego models and plenty of smaller rides for youngsters.</p><h2 data-header-link="7. Rainbow’s End (New Zealand)">7. Rainbow’s End (New Zealand)</h2><p>At first glance, this top Kiwi attraction might look like it’s only for the big kids. Rides with names like Stratosfear, Power Surge and Fearfall are clearly not for the preschool audience. But the larger portion of this Auckland attraction is devoted to families and younger children. The Kidz Kingdom caters for those under 8 years, and includes a fortress of fun play zone, the Pirate Bay cannon blasters, and any number of other diversions. We could have chosen one of the Disney parks, or movie-centric hubs like Universal Studios, one of the many SeaWorlds or numerous other venues. But nothing says “American family entertainment” like Sesame Street, and so we’ve picked its spin-off theme park in Philadelphia. Opened in 1980, the park is 100% themed around the long-running show, with attractions such as Oscar’s Wacky Taxi, Big Bird’s Rambling River, and water fun area The Count’s Splash Castle. The ever-popular Elmo and Cookie Monster also get their own areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="9. Paultons Park (UK)">9. Paultons Park (UK)</h2><p>Paultons Park (<a href="https://kidadl.com/venue/paultons-park">tickets</a>) shares its initials with its most famous draw: Peppa Pig. The park contains dozens of Peppa-themed rides and activities, including George’s Dinosaur Adventure, Grandpa Pig’s Boat Trip and the Muddy Puddle water play area (don’t worry, it’s only water). Parc Astérix (France)">10. Parc Astérix (France)</h2><p>In the famous comic books, Asterix’s village was located in Normandy. The plucky Gaul’s theme park, however, is more convenient for international travellers, a short bus ride north-east of Paris. Parc Astérix is enormously popular, and second only to Disneyland Paris for visitor numbers in France. Its zones tend to reflect the historic cultures from the books (Gauls, Romans, Greeks, Egyptians…), with plenty of roller coasters, water rides and gentler rides for smaller children.&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="11. Hello Kitty Land (Japan)">11. Hello Kitty Land (Japan)</h2><p>Hello Kitty is arguably the most famous cat in the world. Created in 1974, the Japanese icon is now rated as the second most lucrative media franchise on the planet (behind only Pokemon). Hello Kitty Land in Tokyo (officially known as Sanrio Puroland) is an indoor theme park with rides, shows, films and games themed around this megastar kitten. A second Hello Kitty theme park, known as Harmonyland, can be found in Hiji, Oita.&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="12. UShaka Marine World (South Africa)">12. uShaka Marine World (South Africa)</h2><p>As the name suggests, uShaka Marine World is a theme park with a largely sea-based offering. Explore one of the largest aquariums in the world, or spend the day on the slides of the Wet and Wild water park. A separate Kids World section is designed for 2-12 year olds, and includes a giant sandpit and Africa’s largest jungle gym. Warner Brothers Movie World (Australia)</h2><p>Australia’s Gold Coast has numerous theme parks, but the one best suited for families is undoubtedly Movie World. This has some of the best roller coasters in Australia, including the Green Lantern with the third steepest drop in the world. There's lots of grass outside to enjoy, and even footballs, badminton, and other toys for the kids to play with. <p>There’s still time left to book a last-minute holiday before school restarts. Forget about getting on a place, and take the less stressful option of a British holiday.</p><h2>What Is A Staycation?</h2><p>There are two schools of thought. Purists define it as a holiday from home. You do not book a hotel or campsite, and you most certainly do not motor half way across the country to the Cotswolds, Cornwall or Barnard Castle. Rather, you either stay put in your own home, or go out and explore the attractions in your local area, then return home.</p><p>The other school of thought says that a staycation is any holiday where you <i>stay</i> in the UK -- as opposed to the (until recently) more common jaunt to Spain, Florida or what-have-you.&nbsp;</p><p>This definition really irritates the purists of the First School, but it seems to be increasingly common, and it’s the one we’re looking at here. Sorry pedants.</p><h2>Why Do A Staycation?</h2><p>Well, why not? The UK is a hugely diverse place, with rolling countryside, amazing beaches, ancient woodlands, mountains, glens, lochs, lakes, caves and Yorkshire pudding. Plus, we’ve got more museums and attractions than you could feasibly visit in a lifetime.</p><p>Getting on a plane right now is a gambler’s game. You might find yourself having to serve a lengthy period of quarantine. You could find your flight cancelled at short notice. And then there’s the increased infection risk of travelling in close confinement with others.&nbsp;</p><p>Britain has many other benefits. You already speak the language, everywhere accepts your contactless card, and you can still catch Hey Duggee every morning. No-brainer.&nbsp;</p><h2>Where Can I Go On A Staycation?</h2><p>Throw a dart at a UK map* and -- wherever it lands -- you’ll probably find a bundle of family attractions and things to do within a short drive of that place. Local lockdowns so far have not closed down holiday homes or hotels, and government guidance does not stop people travelling to a lockdown area for a holiday. However, this could change. At the very least, your range of options for places to visit would be more limited.&nbsp;</p><p>Don’t let this put you off, though. Chances are that most parts of the country will remain ‘open’ during the rest of the summer and early autumn.</p><h2>I’m A Pedant, And I Do Not Accept Your Definition Of Staycation. The hotel has two restaurants, one is Michelin starred and serves British cuisine and the other pan-Asian. </p><p>The hotel is currently open and taking bookings subject to availability, but is an easy spot to maintain social distancing and has the most beautiful scenery and relaxing atmosphere. </p><h2 data-header-link="Cowley Manor - Cotswolds">Cowley Manor - Cotswolds</h2><p>With 30 bedrooms, an award-winning spa, two heated swimming pools, 55 acres of garden to explore, and the fact that it's super close to the Cotswolds if you want to get out and adventure - the Cowley Manor is the perfect spot to celebrate the end of your pregnancy. All of the bedrooms are light, bright, and airy with huge bathtubs to take a soak in. Take a picnic with the kids and sit amongst the ancient oaks. If you're looking for a more relaxed staycation, you can enjoy the direct access to the beach, and stroll down the Ayrshire coast. Or, if you're after something more action-packed you can try out the Splashaway Bay multi-level water complex, the Airspace sports hall, or the Lighthouse Harbour Adventure Village. </p><p>You'll be able to choose between a caravan or an apartment (and pick whether you want a quiet spot or close to the action), or you can pitch a tent and make use of the shared facilities. There are also six different spots for food and drink, a supermarket, a laundrette, and a golf course. </p><p>Craig Tara Holiday Park reopens on the 17th of July and is currently preparing to best follow hygiene and social distancing measures. </p><h2 data-header-link="Nairn Lochloy Holiday Park - Nairn">Nairn Lochloy Holiday Park - Nairn</h2><p>With the gorgeous Nairn Beach just outside your doorstep, you and the family can experience a fun-filled trip in either a fully equipped lodge, a fully equipped caravan, or a tent. The park itself has its own indoor pool, crazy golf, sauna, arcade, pizza takeaway, and restaurant to try out - or if you want to venture off-site you'll be able to visit the nearby beach for a dip or picnic on the sand, castles, forests, country parks, and nature trails. Not to mention, the ever-famous Loch Ness is just around the corner! </p><p>The park is taking bookings online from the 6th of July onwards, so you'll want to get booking as soon as possible!</p><h2 data-header-link="Sandylands - Ayrshire">Sandylands - Ayrshire</h2><p>Hire out one of Sandylands' fully equipped, accessible caravans for a stay you'll never forget. The beach is just minutes away and gives the park lovely views of the coast, but if you'd rather stay on-site you can make use of the two golf courses, the outdoor adventure playground, the fish and chips takeaway, the Boathouse Restaurant, the heated pool, and the on-site supermarket. Alternatively, you can use the nearby station to hop on over to Glasgow for a day trip. There are plenty of memories to be made and things to do, so don't miss out!</p><p>Sandylands are taking bookings for July, following government guidelines. </p>
