So you’ll be looking for alternative ideas to celebrate the spooky festival with the family. The Kidadl cauldron overfloweth with spooky ideas.</p><h2>Trick Or Treat Without The Street</h2><p>It’s possible to ‘go’ trick or treating without leaving the home. You just need some toys and a little imagination. First gather together any toy buildings your children might have -- dolls houses, Peppa Pig’s house, Playmobil… anything. It doesn’t matter if they’re from wildly different franchises -- who says GI Joe can’t live next door to She-Ra? If you don’t have (m)any such things, you can instead build houses from Lego or other building blocks. Or you can, of course, make houses from old shoe boxes or cereal packers. The more the merrier. Line up all your houses into a toy street.</p><p>Next, we need to decorate the street. You could craft some Halloween bunting with a bit of string and some orange and black paper. Make mini-pumpkins from playdoh. Whatever you can conjure from the imagination. Then, we need to assign householders to each building. Kids love doing this sort of thing. Let them choose which dolls, soft toys or action figures live in which house.</p><p>Finally, you need to choose another toy to do the trick or treating. Have fun dressing it up in a Halloween costume. An old white cloth and an elastic band make a quick and easy ghost disguise, for example. From about a third of the way up, you’ll begin to glimpse the Leicester Square Ginger Bread Man… fabled guardian of this tube station. His gigantic head is made from nothing more than coincidentally placed loudspeakers and strip lighting, but kids will find it magical. I’ve often wondered if he was baked by the Muffin Man of nearby Drury Lane.</p><p><br></p><p><em>Emerge from the station and find Cranbourn Street, which heads off towards Covent Garden. I’m not going to tell you exactly where, as it’s a fun, family game trying to track it down. It purports to be an old hook reserved for use by the Metropolitan Police. According to some history books and websites, the hook was once used by traffic police, who could hang their capes here in hot weather. The story has never been substantiated. Whether it is a genuine ‘police hook’, or some kind of weird prank would need further detective work.&nbsp;</p><p>‍</p><p><em>Take Garrick Street, and keep following it as it bends round a corner past the Tesco Metro. This has long been known as the actor’s church, thanks to its proximity to the big theatres. It’s worth browsing the memorial plaques on the many benches as some are to famous actors (including John Thaw and Beryl Reid). What you’re looking for, really, though is this giant penny -- and again, I won’t tell you exactly where it’s hidden. The cast-iron coin was installed in 2013 to mark 60 years since the Queen’s coronation, and it takes the form of a penny from that year. This is one coin that won’t get picked up from the floor -- it weighs nearly two tons.</p><p>‍</p><p><em>Return to Garrick Street and continue along to Chandos Place. Towards the bottom of that street, look out for an alley called Brydges Place.</em></p><h2 data-header-link="London’s Narrowest Alley?">London’s narrowest alley?</h2><figure class="w-richtext-figure-type-image w-richtext-align-fullwidth" style="max-width:800px"><div><img src="https://media.kidadl.com/5f6206ffb668f41b7c6c1256-brydges-place-londons-narrowest-alley.jpeg" loading="lazy" alt="Brydges Place, London's narrowest alley." width="800" height="600" srcset="https://media.kidadl.com/thumbnail_5f6206ffb668f41b7c6c1256-brydges-place-londons-narrowest-alley.jpeg 208w,https://media.kidadl.com/small_5f6206ffb668f41b7c6c1256-brydges-place-londons-narrowest-alley.jpeg 500w,https://media.kidadl.com/medium_5f6206ffb668f41b7c6c1256-brydges-place-londons-narrowest-alley.jpeg 750w,https://media.kidadl.com/5f6206ffb668f41b7c6c1256-brydges-place-londons-narrowest-alley.jpeg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1012px) 100vw, 620px"></div></figure><p>Take a walk along Brydges Place. It serves as a back-door exit for several pubs and restaurants, so can get a bit smelly. But keep going. Hold your nose. And watch out for other people, as you can’t social distance down here. As you progress along, the walls close in until the point where the alley debouches onto St Martin’s Lane. Here the walls are spaced little more than a foot apart, meaning that larger pedestrians might struggle to pass through. Brydges Place is widely claimed to be London’s narrowest alley, though Emerald Court in Bloomsbury is also a contender.&nbsp;</p><p>‍</p><p><em>Leave St Martin’s Place and head towards the imposing church of St Martin-in-the-Fields. If you have time, head down to the crypt cafe, which also houses a small museum (whose delights include an old public whipping post). The east window is also a bit special. Created by Iranian artist Shirazeh Houshiary, the warped window replaces a more traditional stained glass affair, which was lost in the Second World War. While you’re in the church yard, look out for one of London’s longest street names, St Martin-in-the-Fields Church Path.</p><p>‍</p><p><em>Leave the church and head east along Strand (that’s its official name, not ‘The Strand’) to Charing Cross station. Today, it’s called plain old York Place. 250 years ago, however, you’d be standing in Of Alley. The unique name was to satisfy the vanity of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham. Around 300 years ago, the Duke sold off this land to a developer, on the proviso that the new streets were named after him. Villiers Street and Buckingham Street survive to this day, while George Street and Duke Street have been renamed. But the developers also threw in an ‘Of Alley’ to make sure all five components of his name were present.&nbsp;</p><p><em>The tour ends here. Secret London: Six West End Curiosities The Kids Will Love

<p>School’s back, but that still leaves weekends for going out with the family. We’ve rounded up the best new openings, exhibitions and festivals to set your sights on.</p><p>We’ll add to this list as we hear of any additional happenings of interest to families. Contact <a href="mailto:matt@kidadl.com">matt@kidadl.com</a> with any suggestions.</p><h2>Museums And Galleries</h2><p><strong>BIG MUSEUMS</strong>: Many cultural venues reopened in July and August, but not all. The big museums welcoming visitors back this month include <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/london-transport-museum-reopens">London Transport Museum</a> and the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/national-maritime-museum-set-to-reopen">National Maritime Museum</a> on 7 September. The Transport Museum’s tickets last a whole year and, if you have one from before lockdown, it will be extended by another five months. The Maritime Museum, meanwhile, has extended its Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition. This magnificent pile not only houses a free art gallery, but also has sumptuous grounds in <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/the-best-scenic-picnic-spots-in-london-for-families">which to stage a family picnic</a>. Pitzhanger Manor in Ealing will also reopen from 10 September. The former country home of architect Sir John Soane had only recently reopened before lockdown, having converted into a sparkling new art gallery and community hub. It returns with an exhibition of contemporary art and photography inspired by William Hogarth’s <i>A Rake’s Progress</i>.</p><p>‍<br>See our <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/these-uk-family-museums-and-attractions-reopen-in-september">full list of museums with dates here</a>.</p><h2>Festivals And Entertainment</h2><p>Coronavirus has forced the cancellation of so many festivals over summer, but autumn sees a brighter picture.</p><p><strong>LIVE MUSIC</strong>: Fancy seeing a live performance from your favourite West End show? Every day, at 10am, performers from hit musicals will gather in The Garden at Centre Point -- a new space right next to Tottenham Court Road Tube, there to sing numbers from their otherwise cancelled productions. The 10-week showcase of free events will be the first time most of these performers have sang in public since lockdown began. “Performers including Emma Hatton, Laura Pick, Oliver Tompsett, Jordan Lee Davies, Luke Friend, Caroline Kay, Gabriel Mokake and Kayleigh McKnight from hit shows such as <i>Wicked</i>, <i>Come From Away</i>, <i>&amp; Juliet</i> and <i>Les Misérables</i> will all be participating in the series”. Follow @centrepointldn or @dualitymusic_uk to get a daily tip-off.</p><p><strong>RIVER</strong>: The annual <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/totally-thames-festival-returns" target="_blank">Totally Thames Festival</a> begins on 1 September. The month-long programme sees riverside walks, paddle sports, arts programmes, storytelling, talks and even a socially distanced children’s choir.</p><p>‍<br>‍<strong>SNOOPING ROUND BUILDINGS</strong>: <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/snoop-around-buildings-with-open-house-london" target="_blank">Open House London</a> also takes place every September, and is a chance for families to explore the architecture of London. This year’s programme is scaled back on previous years, but still includes plenty of buildings you can snoop around -- from ancient churches to modern office blocks. Alternatively, sign up to one of the guided walks or virtual tours of historic buildings.</p><p><br><strong>FLOATING CINEMA</strong>: Drive-in cinemas were all the rage (actually, pretty much the only rage) over this coronavirus summer, and the theme continues with OpenAire. Based in Paddington Square, OpenAire is a ‘floating cinema’, where you watch from a boat. It’s geared up to families with plenty of kids films including <i>Toy Story</i>, <i>The Lion King</i> and <i>Froze</i>n. (Or would you dare watch Titanic?)</p><p><br><strong>GREENWICH + DOCKLANDS: </strong>If you’re over at the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/national-maritime-museum" target="_blank">National Maritime Museum</a>, consider looking into this vibrant arts festival, which runs through early September. Explore open-air sculptures and installations, or attend one of the live music, dance or theatre events. Be sure to check out Luke Jerram’s Gaia, a giant model of the Earth hanging in the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/the-painted-hall" target="_blank">Painted Hall</a> (from the same artist who placed the Moon in the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/natural-history-museum" target="_blank">Natural History Museum</a>).</p><p><br><strong>DESIGN</strong>: London Design Festival also returns with a more limited programme of mostly outdoor events. The <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/see-londons-largest-treasure-hoard-at-museum-of-london-docklands" target="_blank">Havering Hoard</a>, the largest haul of Bronze Age artefacts ever discovered in London, was discovered in 2018 and forms the centrepiece of this free exhibition, which runs until April 2021.</p><p><br><strong>DOGS</strong>: From 19 September, Japan House in Kensington has a tantalising exhibition called Architecture for Dogs. Looking beyond the stereotypical slope-roofed kennel, the show pulls together dog-friendly designs from world-renowned architects and artists. It’s another free exhibition.</p><p><br><strong>DINOSAUR</strong>: Remember Dippy the Dinosaur? For decades, the skeletal diplodocus was the first thing visitors to the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/natural-history-museum" target="_blank">Natural History Museum</a> would see on entering, before he was replaced a few years ago by a blue whale skeleton. Dippy is now touring the country and, from 7 September, will be on show at Rochdale’s Number One Riverside centre.<br>&nbsp;</p>

Stuff To Do With Kids In September

<p>Wannabe wizards and witches will be charmed to hear about the reopening of the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/warner-bros-studio">Warner Brothers Studio Tour</a>.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>The studios, in Leavesden near Watford, created much of the action for the Harry Potter series. They’ve since converted old backlots into a wizarding studio tour -- an act of transfiguration that Professor McGonagall would be proud of.</p><p>Visitors can wander around the recreated sets, including Diagon Alley, Platform 9 ¾, Hogwart’s Great Hall and the Forbidden Forest. Kids can also explore the many props, costumes and special effects used across the eight films. (Top fact: Daniel Radcliffe went through 160 pairs of glasses and 70 wands during filming.)</p><p>The tours begin again on 20 August, and all tickets must be prebooked.<br></p><p>The Making of Harry Potter tour is arguably the best family day out in Watford (although, believe it or not, we have found <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/things-to-do-with-kids-in-watford">14 other contenders</a>).<br></p><p>Accio tickets!</p><div></div>

Things To Do This Weekend, 11th-12th January

<p>London is a melting polyjuice potion of Harry Potter locations direct from the movies. Across the capital you’ll find places that feature in the magical stories which your kids will instantly recognise, and you don't need to board the Knight Bus to reach them. Set off on the Cinematic Harry Potter Experience with Boat Ride around London - perfect for children aged 7+ - and even confirmed muggles will be able to experience some of Harry’s wizardry first hand, thanks to the state-of-the-art projection included on the tour. You’ll explore iconic Harry Potter locations like Diagon Alley, the bridge destroyed by Death Eaters, Platform 9 ¾ and so much more. Throughout the tour your guide will be providing you with trivia, reenactments and movie clips. You'd be surprised how many iconic London buildings feature in the films - here are our top 8 Harry Potter locations to spot while you're out and about in the capital.</p><h2><strong>1. Styled to look like Ollivander’s wand emporium, it’s packed with potions, horcruxes and robes. Westminster Tube (destination: Ministry of Magic)</strong></h2><p><a href="https://kidadl.com/venue/westminster-abbey">Westminster</a> Underground Station is the nearest stop to the Ministry Of Magic in Harry Potter &amp; The Order Of The Phoenix and is used by Harry and Mr Weasley. Like many first time visitors to London, Mr Weasley struggles to negotiate the ticket barriers...<strong>‍</strong></p><h2><strong>5. Lambeth Bridge</strong>‍</h2><p>It was on Lambeth Bridge that the Knight Bus had to squeeze its way through two Routemasters in Harry Potter &amp; The Prisoner of Azkaban. Routemasters may be double-deckers but the Knight Bus is a triple decker!</p><p>If your kids are wondering why the bridge is painted red, it’s to represent the benches in the House of Lords. Head downstream to Westminster Bridge and you'll see that it’s painted green – to represent the benches in the House Of Commons.<strong>‍</strong></p><h2><strong>7. The entrance to the Leaky Cauldron pub is actually an opticians on Bull's Head Passage. <strong>‍</strong></p><h2><strong>8. Australia House</strong></h2><p>Gringotts Wizarding is (as far as we’re aware) the only bank in the magical world. In Harry Potter &amp; The Philosopher's Stone the bank scenes were filmed in the impressive interior of Australia House on the Strand in central London.
