How To Make Lockdown Memory Scrapbooks

<p><em>Image © Karolina Grabowska from Pexels.</em></p><p>Origami is a beautiful traditional Japanese paper craft that can be adapted for lots of different levels of skill and ages. </p><p>If you're looking for a craft that doesn't leave your floor covered in glitter and paint, origami is a great choice that kids and parents can enjoy together. We've put together two of our favourite easy <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/how-to-make-origami-stars-for-cute-decorations" target="_blank">origami</a> cat designs that are simple to follow along at home for kids of all ages, and can be combined to make an adorable simple cat, or 'neko,' which is the Japanese word for cat. </p><p>They make a perfect gift, or character to play with, or a cute decoration for your child's bedroom. We've worked out how to make easy <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/how-to-make-an-origami-duck" target="_blank">origami</a> cat designs that are perfect for beginners, so if you're looking for a simple cat face or easy full body origami cat, these are the perfect step by step origami guides for you.</p><h2 data-header-link="How To Make An Origami Cat Face">How to Make an Origami Cat Face</h2><p>What You'll Need:</p><p>A <a href="https://geni.us/VACAti3" target="_blank">square of origami paper </a>(or paper cut into squares that are 20cm by 20cm) </p><p><a href="https://geni.us/s8wGB8" target="_blank">Pens</a> to decorate</p><h2 data-header-link="How To: Origami Cat Face Instructions">How To: Origami Cat Face Instructions</h2><p>First, turn your origami paper so the back side is facing up (this side is usually white). Make sure your surface is clean so you don't get any marks on your cat face, and turn the paper so one of the corners is pointed towards you. </p><p>Fold the bottom corner of your origami paper to meet the top corner, so you have a triangle shape. Run your nail or finger down the crease to make sure it's sharp. Check out our handy tips below for more instructions on how to make sure your origami cat folds are as neat as possible.</p><p>Next, gently half your triangle again, so the longest side of the triangle is halved down the centre. Instead of folding, pinch 1cm at the bottom of the triangle to mark the middle of your paper. Once you've done this, unfold the origami paper. </p><p>Take the right point of the triangle, and fold it up at a 20 <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/scale-degree-names-explained-for-parents">degree</a> angle, so that it makes a point that is roughly 2cm away from your centre point. Repeat this step with the left point of the triangle, trying to make sure that the two points are equal. You should now have three points at the top of your origami shape, and one point facing you.</p><p>Taking the corner facing you, fold it up by about 3cm to make your origami cat chin. Next, flip the origami cat over so the right side of your origami animal is facing you. Fold the middle point at the top down, so it reaches where the two side points line up. Your shape should now look like an origami cat face with two pointed ears. </p><p><strong>Top Tip:</strong> If you want your cat to be two different colours, just fold one sheet of the origami paper down, so it reveals the back colour of your paper. </p><p>Flip your origami cat face over, and fold in the sides a little, to make your cat head shape look slightly more rounded. You will be able to attach it to the cat body to make your complete cat origami. </p><p>Place your second sheet of origami paper in front of you, with one corner pointing towards you, the coloured side of the paper facing down.</p><p>Fold your paper in half horizontally and make sure the fold is sharp by running a nail down it. Unfold it. Repeat the same step, folding the origami paper the opposite way, so you have a cross in the middle. </p><p>For the next step, fold the bottom corners of the paper into the middle so you make a kite shape - the two bottom edges should meet in the middle of your origami. </p><p>Fold the top inside corners out by half a centimetre to create two tiny triangles. Once you've folded them, tuck them inside, so you can't see them.</p><p>Open up the whole left side of your cat body, and fold the left side into the middle, while pinching it together at the centre, so you create a 3D shape that pokes out towards you. Fold this down to flatten, and the left side of your origami cat should look like a diamond shape, with a small flap in the middle. </p><p>Repeat the same step on the right side of your origami cat, and turn your origami paper over. It should be a clean diamond shape on this side, with a long point facing you.</p><p>Fold the bottom third of the diamond up into the middle, and turn your origami cat body over. Then, make a small fold in the top point of your origami sheet, and then fold it again so it meets the fold line in the middle of your origami cat body. </p><p>Attach the head with some sticky tape, or by slotting the head and body together carefully. It's hard to fix mistakes once they happen in origami.</li><li>Always fold your origami away from you. </li><li>If you want your creases to be sharp, use a ruler and a finished biro (one without any ink in) to go over the edges, for steps when you need to create folded lines.</li><li>Make sure you've got clean hands and a clean work surface before you start your origami cat, so it doesn't end up with any grubby marks on it. (If grubby marks happen anyway, the best thing to do is decorate your origami cat with lots of glitter and colourful pens).</li><li>If your origami cat doesn't work out perfectly the first time, don't worry! How To Make An Origami Cat: Two Amazing Ways For Beginners And Pros

<p>Spending time together as a <a href="https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/fifteen-creative-ways-to-make-a-family-tree" target="_blank">family</a> can quickly go from great fun to complete chaos - especially if there is more than one child in the family.</p><p>Many of the classic board games and family activities can bring out <strong>rivalry</strong> between siblings - ending in fights and tears. Finding ways to encourage siblings to get along, to play nicely together and to avoid fighting and constantly falling out can be difficult, but there are lots of games and activities that siblings can do together that will help them to <strong>bond</strong> and build more <strong>positive sibling relationships</strong>.</p><p>We have gathered a list of eleven activities for siblings to do together, which focus more on <strong>cooperation</strong> than competition. Get siblings to work <strong>side by side</strong> rather than against one another, as this will help to avoid fighting. Simply have the siblings take turns to call out the name of an animal, and then act out how that animal walks and talks. Working in pairs, get each sibling to take it in turns to hold a sheet of clear plastic in front of their face, whilst the other sibling paints their portrait directly onto the clear plastic. If you want to go the extra mile you could even have a go at ageing your map so that it really looks like an ancient pirate treasure map!</p><p><strong>What you'll need:</strong></p><p>paper</p><p>tea bags</p><p>lighter</p><p>baking tray</p><p><strong>How to do it:</strong></p><p>-Draw your map on the paper. Draw in the key landmarks. Either use your imagination and turn the bath into a shark-infested lagoon, the fridge into an ice monster etc. or just put the key spots in as they are in real life. Draw a rough outline of your hunt space, and draw some dotted paths in from site to site if you want. Sketch in a compass as a bonus detail, and most importantly, make sure to mark the spots where eggs are hidden with an X!</p><p>-Boil some water and make a cup of black tea. Lay the map on a baking tray. Strain the teabag a bit and dab it all over the map so that it takes on that browned, aged look. You can even rub a bit of turmeric on it to give it a yellowish tinge if you want to push the boat out.</p><p>-Put the oven on a low setting and bake the map for five minutes or so, until it is dry.</p><p>-With a lighter, carefully burn the edges of the map and crumple it up a bit.</p><p>-The next step is to either leave it out for them to find, hand it to them or create another treasure hunt leading them to the treasure map!</p><h2>Scavenger Hunt</h2><p>An Easter scavenger hunt is a great way to have an exciting, challenging hunt without going overboard on the sugar consumption. Make a list of items that you've hidden around the house or garden and have your children search for the items on the list and trade them in for a grand prize at the end of the hunt. This is a great outdoor Easter egg hunt but also works perfectly inside.</p><p><strong>What you'll need</strong>:</p><p>Items to hide such as a striped painted egg, a spotty painted egg, a chick toy, an image you've drawn or printed of a bunny, etc. You can also add items such as a dandelion, a daisy, a leaf etc if you have outdoor space.</p><p>A list you've printed out or drawn, listing all the items you've hidden.</p><p>Prizes , such as an Easter egg or chocolate bunny.</p><p><strong>How to do it:</strong></p><p>-Hand out the lists and send the children off to search for the items on the list. Easter Fun! How To Make Your Own Easter Egg Hunt Clues To Enjoy In The Garden

<p>It can be difficult to find fun things to do in the Easter holidays at home, especially during lockdown. This Easter, families across the UK are having to spend a little more time together inside and a little less time outside. Whether you've been taking the structured approach to the Easter holidays with our fabulous <a href="https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/2-week-guide-the-best-fun-things-for-kids-to-do-in-lockdown" target="_blank">2-week guide</a>, or mixing it up with some child-friendly <a href="https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/things-to-make-and-do-with-stem-obsessed-kids-to-power-through-lockdown" target="_blank">science experiments</a>, Easter Sunday is the perfect opportunity to take a breather and have some well-deserved family fun! So, we've come up with a stack of fantastic family activities that are sure to keep the whole family entertained at home this Easter holiday. These low-fuss ideas won't break the bank and don't require outdoor space, so you're free to relax and focus on enjoying your Easter Day.</p><h2 data-header-link="Pin The Tail On The Easter Bunny">Pin the tail on the Easter Bunny</h2><div></div><p><strong>You will need:</strong> A large piece of paper or card, marker pens, a glue stick, a blindfold (a tie or thick headband will do!) and some cotton wool balls. </p><p>First, draw out your bunny! You can draw this any way you like, but a simple bunny outline can be made by drawing a snowman shape (two circles, one above the other), with two long ovals on top for the ears. You can then draw a small circle where the bunny's tail should be. Then, find a space on a wall or door that is easy for children to reach, and stick the bunny in place. Next, take the cotton wool balls (one per person per round), and carefully add a small amount of glue to one side before handing them out (if you think this might be a bit too messy for you, feel free to use blu tack or double sided tape instead!). The kids can then take it in turns to cover their eyes with the blindfold and try and 'pin' the tail on the bunny! The aim of the game is to stick the 'tail' as close as possible to the tail on the picture. If you don't have glue or cotton wool balls, don't worry- you can easily substitute with a cut-out paper tail instead.</p><p>This twist on a typical home party game will certainly ramp up the fun and get everybody in the mood to celebrate!</p><h2 data-header-link="DIY Easter Egg Cups">DIY Easter egg cups</h2><p>This fun activity will make sure this Easter holiday isn't one to forget! These adorable clay egg cups are easy peasy to make, and can be reused again and again all year round! Prep the egg cups a couple of days beforehand as they may take a while to fully dry.</p><p><strong>You will need:</strong> Air drying clay, an egg or two, and paints and paintbrushes for decorating (acrylic paints work well).</p><p>First, open your block of clay and cut it into sections. Next, roll into balls, each about the size of a tangerine. Help the kids roll each ball into a cylinder shape, flattening the ends on the table and making sure the ends are wide enough for an egg to sit comfortably. Then, take an egg and lightly push it onto the end of the cylinder, leaving a perfectly egg-shaped dent. Now you have the basic egg cup shape, feel free to get creative! Try adding texture while they're still wet, with forks, buttons, or anything else you can find around the house. Another idea is adding a label to each egg with an activity they must do before searching for their next egg, such as 'jump like a bunny' or 'quack like a duck'. This will help keep the children engaged and get rid of some of that excess energy!</p><h2 data-header-link="Have An Egg Rolling Race">Have an Egg Rolling Race</h2><p>This traditional race has been famously played all across the UK, and the world. Even the White House has a designated Easter Egg Roll on Easter Monday, and became a tradition over a hundred years ago when the president allowed children on to the White House grounds to roll their eggs!</p><p><strong>To create your own egg rolling race, you will need: </strong>Eggs (we recommend 1-2 per person), a saucepan, water, spoons (ideally wooden, but any will do), and some tape or string to mark out the lanes. </p><p>Firstly, place your eggs in the saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and boil for 8-10 minutes, until hard-boiled. Then, using a slotted spoon, remove the eggs and leave to cool on a tea towel. While the eggs are cooling down, take your tape or string and mark out some 'lanes' on the ground. When you are ready to start, each person places their egg at the start line, and attempts to roll it along to the finish line using only a spoon. Traditionally wooden spoons are used for this, but tablespoons also work. The aim of the game is to get your egg to the finish line first, using only the spoon to roll it along. &nbsp;</p><p>This classic Easter activity will get the whole family in fits of giggles, and children will love hearing the story that goes along with it.</p><h2 data-header-link="Accessorise With Some Easter Bunny Ears!">Accessorise with some Easter Bunny ears!</h2><p>No Easter day is truly complete without bunny ears! The whole family can get involved with this quick and simple craft activity. All you need is a headband or two hair clips per person, and some pipecleaners (whatever colours you like!). &nbsp;Simply take two pipe cleaners, fold them in half, then twist them in place on each side of your headband. Alternatively, twist them onto two hair clips so they can be worn on each side of your head, and voila! Instant bunny ears! This particular method involves blowing out the inside of the eggs, leaving the shells ready to decorate and keep! </p><p><strong>All you need is:</strong> A needle or pin, a cocktail stick, skewers, eggs, a bowl, and craft materials for decorating.</p><p>First of all, take your needle/ pin, and, holding your egg upright, press directly into the top of the egg creating a small hole. Next, take your cocktail stick and carefully insert this into the hole to widen it slightly. While the stick is inside, wiggle it around a little to help break up the yolk and white. Then turn your egg upside down and do the same on the bottom side of the egg. This time, try to make the hole slightly larger, as this is where the white and yolk will come out. Again, use your cocktail stick to break up the yolk. And now for the fun part! Get the kids to position their eggs right-side up over a bowl, and simply blow through the top hole, being careful not to crack the shell. This part can take a few minutes, but eventually the white and yolk should slowly come out from the bottom of the egg. Once the shell is hollow, rinse it out with some warm water and you are ready to decorate!</p><p>To decorate your eggs without getting too messy, place a skewer through the holes and then position it over a bowl. Now the kids can customise their eggs using paint, pens, or any other craft materials you may have. Try adding googly eyes to make your own Easter chicks or bunny pals!</p><h2 data-header-link="Make A Puzzle Out Of Lolly Sticks">Make a puzzle out of lolly sticks</h2><p>This is another quick and easy craft idea that will keep the kids entertained while getting creative. </p><p><strong>You will need:</strong> 8-12 wooden lollipop sticks, pens/paint and tape. </p><p>All you need to do for this activity is lay down a strip of tape, sticky side up, and lay the lollipop sticks along the length of the tape side-by-side, so they are fixed in place while you decorate them. Next, take your pens or paints and get creating! You could try painting or drawing some Easter eggs, flowers or yellow chicks, or whatever takes your fancy. This short project is super fun, and you can include your previous Easter crafts. All you need is a small tree or plant, and some string to make your decorated eggshells into wonderful Easter decorations. Alternatively, you can create your own small 'tree' by twisting wire into branches, and fixing to the bottom of a plant pot or dish using blu tack or glue. All you need to do now is simply tape a loop of string to the top of your decorated eggs and pop them on the tree! Don't have eggs? You can cut some egg shapes out of card and decorate these with pens, then attach them in the same way. Simply get together a bowl, a saucepan, some water, a big bar of chocolate and some dipping implements (think skewers with marshmallows or strawberries!). Fill the saucepan to about 1/3 of the way up with water, and place the bowl over the top. You can then break up the chocolate into smaller pieces and place it into the bowl. Next, heat up the water in the saucepan on the hob, and gently stir the chocolate until it melts and becomes completely smooth. Carefully transfer the hot chocolate to a cool bowl, place your fruit or marshmallows on cutlery or skewers, and dip away!</p><h2 data-header-link="Start A Scrapbook">Start a scrapbook</h2><p>This Easter, the school holidays are looking a little different than normal. Working on filling a daily scrapbook is &nbsp;a great way for children to put aside a little time every day to collect their thoughts, reflect and create. It is also a fun and free way to keep a memento of all the activities they get up to at home, and collect together all their Easter crafts too. </p><p><strong>You will need: </strong>A blank notebook or some pieces of craft paper, folded in half and stapled, pens, paint and craft materials. Encourage the kids to (hygienically) collect things they find, or make drawings of things they see or experience. Making rubbings by placing paper over textured surfaces, printing out photographs or cutting pictures out of magazines are great examples of things that can be included in an Easter holiday scrapbook. </p><p>With this activity, there are no rules! 12 Ways To Have A Cracking Easter With Kids At Home In Lockdown

<p>Role-play is a great way to celebrate your little ones' imaginations and can be entertaining for the whole family!</p><p>Not only this, but it is also a really good way for children to develop their communication skills in different circumstances - for example, how they must alter their use of language for different age groups. Pretend play can also be a good way to teach children about important topics and different cultures in a way that they understand. So, we've put together a list of our 25 top role-play activities for kids to cover all kinds of important life lessons!</p><h2 data-header-link="1. Boot Camp">1. Boot Camp</h2><div></div><p>Take your kids on a training camp for the afternoon! Make an obstacle course made of anything you can find around the house and ask one child to do the stopwatch whilst the other completes the course. Like the military, this is not a competition between each other - this should be a teamwork activity with plenty of cheering and encouragement.</p><h2 data-header-link="2. Farmer">2. Farmer</h2><p>If your kids have stuffed farm animals, why not set up some pens for them in the garden and feed/look after them for the day. Teacher">12. Teacher</h2><p>This is another classic that no doubt younger children have already played. But to get the older kids involved, why not ask them to host actual lessons with a test quiz at the end? Grocery Store">13. Grocery Store</h2><p>Grab some items from the cupboard and price up the food using stickers. You could create some fake money for the customers to come in and trade. Encourage them to play multiple roles or use imaginative play to pretend that their shop is busy! This can be a great activity to learn about money and budgeting. </p><h2 data-header-link="14. Vets">14. Vets</h2><p>Have a receptionist role and a vet role to act out looking after sick pets! They may want to use their imagination to make up pretend visitors, or you can bring in multiple stuffed toys for them to examine. Don’t forget the food and water bowls!</p><h2 data-header-link="15. Astronaut">15. Astronaut</h2><p>Make a rocket in the living room using household items and put a space exploration video on the TV for the kids to watch. Use role-play to learn what it's like in space and ask them to complete tasks that a real astronaut would do - for example eating a sandwich upside down.</p><h2 data-header-link="16. Aliens">16. Aliens</h2><p>Use role-plays to imagine that the children have just landed on earth. Ask them how an alien would feel if everything around them was new or different - and watch them investigate the simple things that they take for granted every day.</p><h2 data-header-link="17. Entrepreneur">17. Entrepreneur</h2><p>Use The Apprentice as inspiration here - to bring out the entrepreneurial side to your kids! Have them think of an idea or an invention and ask them to think about how they can sell it! Ask questions like 'who would want this item?' and 'how much would they pay for it?'. Try to use something that they're interested in to encourage them to turn it into a business idea - for instance, kids who like writing might write a book, or kids who love baking may want to start a cookie business! This is a great way for them to consider future passions or professions.</p><h2 data-header-link="18. Theatre">18. Theatre</h2><p>This one has endless possibilities and kids will come up with all sorts of imaginative role play ideas! Find a story or movie for them to act out, or encourage them to make up their own. Some may even want to make tickets, write scripts and make costumes.</p><h2 data-header-link="19. Circus">19. Circus</h2><p>Dig out your hula hoops, props and costumes and use role-play to act out a circus scene! Create posters to stick around the home and think about what tricks they can perform! Why not use the family dog in the tricks and teach them the importance of respecting animals in circuses? </p><h2 data-header-link="20. Office">20. Office</h2><p>Create a computer by drawing a screen onto a box and form a desk set up with your old office supplies! Encourage them to think of tasks to complete in the office and maybe even host a meeting about something really important. Ask the CEO to delegate jobs to everyone else involved and watch them have countless hours of fun pretending to be an adult with a really important job!</p><h2 data-header-link="21. Aeroplane">21. Aeroplane</h2><p>Pull some chairs into two lines to look like a cabin, or enough to form the cockpit. Let the kids do the rest and watch them go through the motions of life as an air-hostess or pilot (this will also depend on how many children are involved)! If your kids have been on planes before, they will know what to do - but if not, give them some pointers as to what happens next.</p><h2 data-header-link="22. Restaurant">22. Restaurant</h2><p>Grab a notebook, a tea towel for their arm and create a kitchen out the back. &nbsp;During the role-play, they can act out an evening as a restauranteur - taking orders, dealing with complaints and compliments to the chef. Whether you use real food or imaginary food is up to you. This is a really easy and fun game to play as it is an environment that they are probably already familiar with, meaning that they won't need much guidance! So, sit back and enjoy being a customer for the evening whilst they do all the hard work!</p><h2 data-header-link="23. Hair Salon">23. Hair Salon</h2><p>Grab some hair ties, clips and combs and encourage your kids to act out a salon at home! This can form the basis of many different role-play activities - as they can work on real peoples' hair (but be careful and no scissors), on dolls or imaginary people.</p><h2 data-header-link="24. Florists">24. Florists</h2><p>If you've got a garden with lots of flowers in, why not encourage them to pick some to sell on in their flower shop? Visit their shop and pick a display to exchange for some loose change.</p><h2 data-header-link="25. Birthday Party">25. Birthday Party</h2><p>This is a great one if your little one has a birthday during lockdown/ Using role-play, they can pretend that all of their friends are round - they can prepare and be the host to an imaginary tea party with plenty of decorations!</p>
