6 Best Martial Arts For Kids To Learn & Why They're Great

<p>Autumn brings all kinds of fun, if you’re the kind of family who enjoy <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/no-prep-outdoor-activities-five-ten-year-olds" target="_blank">messing about outdoors</a>. We’ve put together five original, and slightly <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/unusual-family-holidays-uk" target="_blank">unusual ideas</a>, for making the most of the leafy season.<br></p><h2 data-header-link="Follow My Virtual Lead">Follow My Virtual Lead</h2><p><strong>What You’ll Need</strong>: A 4G-enabled phone or tablet, and some friends who have the same.</p><p><strong>Where To Go</strong>: Any park, woods or open space with a good 4G signal. Or else you can do this at home over wifi.</p><p><strong>What To Do</strong>: First of all, call up as many friends as you like via Zoom, WhatsApp or any other video chat service. You’ll need to pre-arrange it so that the friends are all in a similar environment (e.g. back garden, or park, or even a bedroom if the great outdoors is looking too miserable).</p><p>Next, someone is chosen as the “leader”. The leader should look around and spot an interesting object nearby. It might be a fallen pine cone, or a maple leaf, or a puddle, or (if indoors) a door handle. The leader should then shout “It’s a pine cone [or whatever]! Follow my lead!!”. Everyone else on the video call then has to run around looking for a similar object in their own vicinity. Whoever finds it first becomes the new Leader, but not before everyone shares their own finds over the screen. And so the game goes on.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Health And Safety</strong>: If doing this outdoors, keep a close eye on your children to make sure they’re looking where they’re going while holding the phone/tablet (which should be in a protective case). You might want to be their “camera crew”, doing all the phone/tablet work while they’re free to explore and present.</p><h2 data-header-link="Leaf Detective">Leaf Detective</h2><p><strong>What You’ll Need</strong>: A large, comedy magnifying glass. (Actually, it’s optional, and just a bit of fun.) You may also like to take a tupperware box for storing natural treasures, and a tree identification book or app.</p><p><strong>Where To Go</strong>: Take the kids to the biggest, best woods within striking distance. If you can get to ancient woodland, then fantastic. Otherwise, a scrappy acre of trees on the edge of your local park will do just fine.</p><p><strong>What To Do</strong>: Wander through the woods, brandishing your magnifying glass, looking out for interesting leaves. The aim is to collect as many differently shaped leaves as possible (preferably ones that haven’t gone all mulchy and maggoty). Each time you find a new shape, have a pause and see if you can identify the tree it fell from. Then, try to list with the kids everything you know about that type of tree, however sketchy (e.g. “It’s an oak, clearly… oaks have acorns, and are good for building ships. And didn’t one of our kings hide up an oak tree once…?). Write all this down in a log book. When you return home, review your notes, and read up about the trees you discovered. You can also take rubbings of the leaves, if you like.</p><p><strong>Health And Safety</strong>: It’s fun and intellectually stimulating for kids to <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/you-brought-what-home-the-random-stuff-that-kids-collect">scavenge around below the trees</a>, but just keep an eye out for nasties, such as rotting plant matter, brambles, nettles and dangerous litter.</p><h2 data-header-link="William The Conkerer">William The Conkerer</h2><p><strong>What You’ll Need</strong>: Nothing whatsoever.</p><p><strong>Where To Go</strong>: You must find a mature horse-chestnut tree. They’re not always easy to locate --&nbsp; they don’t tend to grow in woods, and are not routinely planted as street trees. But most towns and villages have a few if you know where to look. The best bet is any reasonably old park (the Victorians loved planting horse chestnuts). A quick google should help you track one down if you don’t already know where they grow.</p><p><strong>What To Do</strong>: This one’s a doddle, and a bit silly, based entirely on a “conker” pun. All you have to do is collect enough conkers to write “1066” in big, conkery numbers on the ground. You can do it with the shiny brown conkers themselves, or else use the spiky carapaces (or a mixture of both). While collecting the conkers, you can use the opportunity to tell the children everything you know about the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England. If that would only take a few seconds, you can instead merry things along by singing the following ditty:&nbsp;</p><p>“1066! King William found some sticks. He made a boat that wouldn’t float. 1066!”. It’s not historically accurate, but I sang it as a child, and it made me happy.</p><p>Once you’ve made your “1066” out of conkers, take a photo and Tweet/Instagram it all over the place (and maybe hashtag us in at #Kidadl #WilliamTheConkerer). You can leave the conker/conquer joke behind for others to find afterwards.</p><p>In a related game, you could see how long a chain of conkers you can form along the ground. And watch out for spikes! Also, don’t assemble your numbers on a pathway or walking route. We wouldn’t want somebody to take a tumble.</p><h2 data-header-link="Potions Class">Potions Class</h2><p><strong>What You’ll Need</strong>: Some kind of substitute cauldron. It could be a small metal pot, or a seaside bucket, or any 1-2 litre container that doesn’t have any holes.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Where To Go</strong>: Any park, garden or woodland.</p><p><strong>What To Do</strong>: You’ll need to do a bit of prep for this one. While the kids are sleeping, or otherwise engaged, you need to draw up a potion recipe. You can pretend you’re Severus Snape if you like -- I won’t tell anyone. The recipe should include five to ten items that can be readily found in your local park or woodland of choice. These might include conkers, acorns, stones, ash keys, sycamore ‘helicopters’, daisies, pine cones, twigs, blackberries (if they’re still fruiting), or anything else you know to be growing nearby. Avoid anything that might be toxic, like mushrooms and unfamiliar berries, and never pick wild flowers unless they’re stupidly common like daisies or dandelions. Draw up the list into an attractive “Potion recipe” card.</p><p>When you’re ready, tell the kids that today is “Potion Class” and you need their help to source ingredients from the park. Head out as a family to look for all the ingredients on the list, putting them into the “cauldron” as you find them.&nbsp;</p><p>Once you’ve got everything, head back home and then turn on the theatrics (again, you could pretend to be Severus Snape if you can affect the nasally voice). Time to brew the potion. Get the kids to add a little water, then tap the side of the cauldron with a toy wand (or stick posing as a wand). Hey presto, your magic potion is ready. Pretend it’s an incredible growth potion for other plants, or an elixir that will bring toys to life (if rubbed into their feet), or some other fantastical outcome… just not for human consumption!</p><p><strong>Health And Safety: </strong>It’s very important to emphasise that the potion should not be drank under any circumstances. Make sure you dispose of the “potion” afterwards, and don’t leave children unattended with it. If you’ve chosen your ingredients sensibly, it shouldn’t contain anything toxic, though there is a health risk from dirt and germs. (Acorn cups, to you and me.) So before you leave the house, ask your child to assemble all the smaller action figures they have into a group (you can pretend it’s like the scene in <em>Toy Story</em>, where Woody calls together all the toys for a meeting). These might include Lego figures, Playmobil, Sylvanian Families or (shudders) LOL Surprise dolls -- anything, really, that might realistically balance an acorn cup on its head. Now, tell the assembled troops that it’s time they all learned to ride a bike, and that you’re going to go out to the woods to get them all helmets.</p><p>You then head along to your nearest oak trees and collect as many acorn cups as you need. Look out for different sizes to match the varied figurines.</p><p>Bring the haul back home and then take time to choose a bespoke “fairy helmet” for each of the small toys. (By the way, it doesn’t have to be fairies. You can adapt the idea to “elf helmets”, “goblin helmets”, “Smurf helmets” or whatever resonates with your child.)</p><p>Now all the toys are kitted out with helmets, it’s up to you to figure out how the tiny bicycle lessons work -- perhaps use Lego or a small wheeled toy as a pretend bike.</p><p><strong>Health And Safety</strong>: Again, only select cups that have already fallen off the tree. 33 No-Prep Outdoor Activities For 5-10-Year-Olds

<p>So…first things first: what exactly is bushcraft?</p><p>Essentially, bushcraft means wilderness living skills. It is the knowledge and skills we have to live, thrive and survive in an <a href="https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/gardener-in-training-planting-seeds-other-kids-garden-ideas">outdoor</a> environment.</p><p>Let’s face it, the most natural environment we can be in is the <a href="https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/no-outside-space-8-indoor-ideas-for-teens">outdoors</a>. We are hard-wired to absorb daylight, not blue light. For the last 80,000 years, sitting around a fire, forming a tribe, sharing food, stories and problem solving has been, and still is, our best form of communication.</p><p>Time perhaps, to return to basics and practice the collective skills of our ancestors once more.<br>&nbsp;</p><h2>Forage And Cook: Wild Garlic Bannock Bread</h2><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://media.kidadl.com/5ed904a07e5023b31e480fd4-5e9ecce5cc454d8456dadf52-1-1.jpeg" alt="Wild Garlic Bannock Bread" srcset="https://media.kidadl.com/thumbnail_5ed904a07e5023b31e480fd4-5e9ecce5cc454d8456dadf52-1-1.jpeg 156w,https://media.kidadl.com/small_5ed904a07e5023b31e480fd4-5e9ecce5cc454d8456dadf52-1-1.jpeg 500w,https://media.kidadl.com/medium_5ed904a07e5023b31e480fd4-5e9ecce5cc454d8456dadf52-1-1.jpeg 750w,https://media.kidadl.com/5ed904a07e5023b31e480fd4-5e9ecce5cc454d8456dadf52-1-1.jpeg 800w" sizes="100vw" width="800"></figure><p>How To Make Bannock Bread</p><p>If you’re lucky enough to be walking through a patch of countryside on your daily outing, you will usually smell wild garlic before you see it. Garlic is a fantastic item to forage for and is easily identifiable due to its large leaves and strong smell. It is also a great way for children to engage all of their senses.</p><p>Tip: An indicator of ancient woodland, you can find garlic in shady woods where they grow in abundance in spring. Take from the back of the bunch and only as much as you need.</p><p>Of course, there are no measuring jugs or scales in the woodland, so follow my simple recipe to make delicious campfire bannocks.</p><p><strong>To make one portion you will need:‍</strong>‍</p><p>A pinch of salt</p><p>1 cup of water</p><p>2 heaped large spoonfuls of flour</p><p>A splash of cooking oil</p><p>A mixing bowl</p><p>A frying pan</p><p>A campfire, BBQ or stove</p><p><strong>Method:</strong> Mix the salt, flour and chopped garlic in a bowl. Gradually add the water, a splash at a time and mix with your fingers. Mix until the ingredients stick together and form a dough-like consistency. Flatten like a thick, round pancake. Heat the oil in a pan and cook the bannock bread for around 3-minutes each side, or more if needed.</p><h2>Make A Fire Without Matche‍s</h2><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://media.kidadl.com/5ed904a0f0f6fe6751a0296d-5e9f0aee35fcab8070b8e1cd-1-1112.jpeg" alt="Fire without matches" srcset="https://media.kidadl.com/thumbnail_5ed904a0f0f6fe6751a0296d-5e9f0aee35fcab8070b8e1cd-1-1112.jpeg 156w,https://media.kidadl.com/small_5ed904a0f0f6fe6751a0296d-5e9f0aee35fcab8070b8e1cd-1-1112.jpeg 500w,https://media.kidadl.com/medium_5ed904a0f0f6fe6751a0296d-5e9f0aee35fcab8070b8e1cd-1-1112.jpeg 750w,https://media.kidadl.com/5ed904a0f0f6fe6751a0296d-5e9f0aee35fcab8070b8e1cd-1-1112.jpeg 800w" sizes="100vw" width="800"></figure><p>When we think about fire we often don't think about why there might be a need for it, but actually, fire is essential for our survival. It provides light, warmth, can be a signal for help, can warn-off predators and is an excellent method of cooking. One of my favourite ways of making fire is using a ‘ferrocerium’ fire striker.</p><p>Tip: You can find these strikers in most outdoor shops (online, too!), however I prefer the ones with large grips as they are easier for little hands to learn on, with supervision of course.</p><p><strong>You will need:</strong></p><p>One ferrocerium fire striker</p><p>A small piece of cotton wool</p><p>Please note: Adult supervision required. Do not touch the cotton wool whilst alight, or immediately afterwards. Tuck in all loose clothing and tie hair back prior to commencing.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Place the cotton wool on a flat outdoor surface on the floor. &nbsp;A stone or log will suffice. Ensure there is nothing else on that surface. Gently pull at the wool turning it into a giant fluffy cloud to increase its surface mass and aid in the catching of a spark. Kneel next to the log or stone. If right handed, take the rod in your left hand and place the tip of it onto the cotton wool. With the steel in your right hand lay its edge on to the rod and push down at speed driving it into the cotton wool. This should produce a spark and the cotton will ignite. Let it burn out and allow the remnants to cool before touching. It brings children’s games to life, develops problem solving and encourages kids to work as part of a team. These are all essential skills children will need as they negotiate this crazy world we call life. But not everyone has access to huge sticks and tarpaulins, so why not build a mini-den for your favourite toy whilst out on your next woodland adventure, or even in your garden or front room?</p><p><strong>You will need:‍</strong><br>- String<br>- A pair of scissors<br>- A selection of sticks and brash<br>- Your chosen toy</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>Cut approximately 1-metre of string. Locate three sticks the same length (this will be dictated by the size of your toy) and gather them together. Tie a loop in the end of your string. Arrange the sticks alongside each other on the floor. Take the string and place the looped end around all three sticks at one end, leaving an inch or two from the top. Take the other end of string and place through the loop, now tighten and this should begin to secure all three sticks together. At this point pick up the sticks and open out the base (the other end to the string), thus forming a stable wigwam shape. Continue to wind the string around the fixing point until tight enough to support itself. Make a small loop and feed the end though (repeat until knot is formed). Begin to lay other sticks both vertically and horizontally around the base. Finish by layering on the brash to give an element of camouflage and wind breaking properties to your shelter.<br>So, what do you think? Maybe try drawing portraits of one another and dating them or writing a letter to your future self! 15 Boredom Busting Garden Games To Make The Most Of The Weather

<p>The Olympic Games can be the most inspiring sporting event for young people. The Games promote international peace, friendly competition and, of course, physical exercise. Recreating the Games at home can be enormous fun, and educational too! Here’s how to do it. Much of the following assumes you have a back garden, but the activities could also be done in a local park.</p><h2 data-header-link="Setting The Scene">Setting the scene</h2><p>First off, we think that you need to make your back garden look less, well, like your back garden! The Olympic stadium has some special features, wherever in the world it is. There's the Olympic flame and the Olympic rings for a start. Plan a crafty afternoon or evening making up some of the Olympic Games 'must-haves' and it will make a huge difference to the experience.</p><p>You'll want to have an Olympic Torch Relay of course for your summer games. You should be able to fashion an Olympic Torch out of things you have at home. The simple way is to make a cone from a sheet of paper or card and then fill it with a 'flame' made from some crumpled-up tissue or crepe paper in a suitable colour.</p><p>The Olympic flame burns throughout the Summer Olympics - who could forget the complex Olympic Cauldron at the London 2012 Olympic Games?. You could utilise a garden lamp or lantern for the same purpose in your Olympic opening ceremony. If you're feeling particularly ambitious make a 'flame' made from a stool, a fan, some ribbon and wire.</p><p>The Olympic rings are blue yellow black green and red. The colours were chosen because at least one of them appears in the flag of each country represented at the Olympic Games. When you host your own Olympic Games you can make your own with painted hula hoops or make a smaller version by cutting out the centre of some paper plates, painting and then glueing together. You can even make some using the art of origami!</p><p>Every Summer Olympics has its mascots - remember Wenlock and Mandeville from London 2012? Enlist the help of a couple of soft toys to do the job for your own Olympic Games. Give them sashes or special outfits and make up some appropriate names for them.</p><p>Finally, you'll have to have some medals - try making some with Aqua Beads or Hama Beads if you have some at home, or cut some out of cardboard and paint or colour with metallic permanent markers. Or how about baking some medal cookies for the winners? Okay, it may just be a different coloured shirt. But get creative if you can - cowboy hats for the USA team, togas for Italy, for example. Or they could carry a flag - this is a good chance to make this a bit educational, but don't let on to the kids. Paint some flags from participating countries, tape to a garden stick or broom handle and your young athletes can wave them at the opening ceremony.</p><h2 data-header-link="Keeping Score">Keeping score</h2><p>You'll need a scoreboard that you use for each event, and then a medals table. If you have a blackboard, whiteboard or easel, then your task is easy. How complicated you make it is up to you - or whoever gets the task of making the boards. We like the idea of using Velcro so that country names and medal tallies can be moved up and down and altered, but if that is a step too far, a simple sheet of paper or side of a cardboard box is good enough. You could get them to have a few goes at the same event - but represent different countries for each go. This is a good way to give them the incentive to do better each time. Otherwise, we love the idea of competing against the neighbours or joining up with friends or family using an app such as Zoom or House Party. This could be hilarious - even if a bit chaotic!</p><h2 data-header-link="Events">Events</h2><p>Now it depends how seriously you're taking this - and this could depend on whether your kids are older, or particularly sporty. In this case, they will appreciate if you make the events as authentic as possible. For younger children, or those who are less physically able, fun is the key, rather than factual accuracy.</p><p><strong>Here are some of our favourite ideas:</strong></p><p><strong>Gymnastics</strong> - rhythmic gymnastics using ball, ribbon or hula hoop. To encourage inclusivity, make sure there are plenty of points for 'artistic interpretation' to make it an even playing field for younger or less able children.</p><p><strong>Shooting</strong> - get the Nerf guns out - or water guns if the weather's nice this summer &nbsp;- and set up your own targets. Some cardboard boxes with circular holes cut in make great target ranges. </p><p><strong>Showjumping </strong>- fashion some jumps from sticks, toys, cushions - whatever you have. The 'horse' should have a skipping rope around their waist, which is held by the 'rider'.</p><p><strong>Horse riding</strong> - littlies can get in on the act as they are given a piggyback by older kids and parents.</p><p><strong>Obstacle course</strong> - jump over plant pots, wriggle under a goal net or large blanket, wind in and out of some bamboo poles, balance along a sleeper or low wall. If this is too tricky for your children, you could draw an obstacle course with chalk on the garden path or drive. Set up a hopscotch court, some lines to follow, and so on. </p><p><strong>Paper plane throwing</strong> - not everyone is great at physical sports, so introduce some different elements - an expertly folded paper plane is just as worthy of a medal!</p><p><strong>Skateboarding</strong> - each Olympics sees new sports added (and some taken away). Tokyo was to be the first Olympic Games to feature skateboarding - but now it will be your back garden summer Olympics where it will make its debut. To avoid accidents/include younger ones, how about getting a doll or teddy to ride the skateboard or scooter around a course?</p><p><strong>Sailing</strong> - set up the paddling pool, or make a 'river' from a length of drainpipe, and compete to sail some paper boats from one end to the other. Follow a tutorial on folding a traditional paper boat. Older kids could make a candle-powered boat.</p><p><strong>Water polo</strong> - while you have the pool out, they can take part in water polo. Make sure you add goggles and swim hats for an authentic experience.</p><p><strong>Fencing</strong> - it's not often you let them poke at each other with sticks, so this should be fun. We suggest something relatively safe - pool noodles are fun and liable to be uncontrollable enough to make this an even fight whatever the children's age and ability.</p><p><strong>Relay races </strong>- forget the boring old baton! Make this one for laughs by getting teams to carry a big cuddly toy and pass to each other - or run around with an inflatable ring around their tummy. It'll be fun watching them trying to get that off and pass it to their teammate.</p><p><strong>Clothes relay </strong>- this is another fun game, which is a great leveller if you have different ages/abilities. Set up the course with a hat, a scarf, a shirt or t-shirt, trousers, skirt and shoes. Hint: Making ridiculous combinations of oversized items adds to the entertainment value for spectators...</p><p><strong>Team games</strong> - tricky if you don't have enough children to make up sides and your pets aren't sufficiently talented enough to go in goal or wield a hockey stick. Basketball is a good choice, as you can play one on one. Get creative with other team sports such as football, netball, rugby and more. Get competitive with skills-based competition - keepie-uppies, goal shooting for footie, ball throwing for rugby, and so on. If you don't have a net, use the washing line and a sheet as a makeshift net. Create a 'net' on the kitchen, dining or garden table using a strip of cardboard or some food boxes. Otherwise, a sleeper or low wall with 1 2 3 chalked on will suffice. You could make an olive/laurel wreath for each head - dig out those festival headdresses &nbsp;- or make your own using leaves from the garden, green paper leaves or daisy chains.</p><p>Finally, finish off your special Summer Olympics with an Olympics feast! If the summer games have been blessed by good weather, finish off the day with a winners' barbecue or picnic. Make some Olympic ring biscuits or iced ring doughnuts in the correct colours, and Olympic Torch ice creams in cones. Decorate cupcakes with Olympic 'rings' made from Smarties and bake homemade pizza decorated with rings of black olives, pineapple pieces, pepperoni and so on. Olympic torch servings of fries can be served in cones or cups. Bowls of blueberries, blackberries, pineapple, melon balls and strawberries or raspberries can also look like Olympic rings.</p>

Make sure 'Simon' knows to instruct the children to do things that won't take them away from their spot - ie, no running to the end of the park and back, as children are bound to end up too close to each other!</p><h2 data-header-link="Give Us A Clue">Give us a clue</h2><p>This is a nice game to play if the weather is warm and you want everyone to chill out for a while. One person has to act out a book, film, song, TV show or play that they have chosen, and everyone else has to guess the title. Remember, you draw a square in the air for TV, wind an old-fashioned camera for film, mime curtains opening for play, mime opening a book or pretend to sing for a song. Hold up fingers to show how many words, show the number of fingers resting on your arm for syllables. The person who guesses correctly takes the next go at miming.</p><h2 data-header-link="Quick On The Draw">Quick on the draw</h2><p>If you have never played Rock, Paper, Scissors with a few seven-year-old boys you have never discovered just how competitive this game can get. Hold your hand out flat for paper, a fist for rock and two-fingers for scissors. Scissors beats paper, rock beats scissors, paper beats rock. Hold a tournament; best of three, and then the winners go into the final. This will ensure they are running the races 2m apart. Mark out the lane with skipping ropes, twigs, or whatever, to make it clear. If you want something more interesting than just running races (especially if you have one child who is really fast and wins everything!) elect a 'coach' who will shout out different instructions throughout the race - such as hop, jump, walk backwards etc. If the kids are on bikes, see if they can win a slow bicycle race. The aim is to cycle as slowly as possible without falling off - the last one over the finish line wins!</p><h2 data-header-link="The Beautiful Game">The beautiful game</h2><p>Football games can be very safe, as long as the kids only touch the ball with their feet. They can set up some passing games, keeping 2m apart. Then make it more tricky by adding in some keepie-uppies before passing the ball back.</p><h2 data-header-link="Freeze Punk!"><strong>Freeze punk!</strong></h2><p>Usually played at parties, musical statues is easily adapted for outdoors. Just use a phone to play some music; make sure you're not close enough to annoy anyone else enjoying the fresh air. Each player must stand at least 2m apart where the 'judge' can see them. Choose an adult or older child or teen to take on this role. As the music plays they must dance - get them to dance on the spot for added safety. Award points for the craziest and most creative dances. When the music stops, everyone must freeze. Older children could chalk a hopscotch or sensory path that everyone could have a go at. A sensory path is a course that has, for instance, a curly line to follow and circles to hop on. You can write instructions next to each part, to make sure everyone knows what they have to do.</p><h2 data-header-link="Bowls Night">Bowls night</h2><p>If you have some skittles, fabulous, if not, make some by half-filling some large water bottles with water. Instead of rolling balls, which would mean handling them, the children can kick a ball to knock over the 'skittles'. Nominate an adult or older child to reset the bottles to avoid lots of people handling them. </p><h2 data-header-link="All Aboard!">All aboard!</h2><p>Pirate Ships is a great game beloved of Beavers and Brownies. Normally, if you're indoors, you would assign a wall to North, South, East and West, but as this will encourage kids to get too close we'll leave that out. Choose a captain to shout out instructions, and then space the kids at 2m distances. You can skip on your own - have a go at some tricks such as scissor jumps where you land with one foot forward, then switch feet on the next jump; Cross jump - land with legs crossed, then apart, then crossed; Swing jump - land on one foot then swing the other leg out to the side. Switch them on the next jump; and Duckie where you land with your heels apart and toes and knees pointing inwards, then on the next jump, point toes and knees out and heels together. Little ones can play snake as long as your rope is long enough to allow distancing. Put the rope on the floor and wiggle it, and then little ones can take turns jumping over it - perfect for littlies who haven't yet mastered the art of skipping.</p><h2 data-header-link="Sweep Up">Sweep up</h2><p>Another game for a skipping rope is Sweeper. Someone stands in the middle and turns around swinging the rope just above the ground. Players stand around in a circle usually - maybe just have one player on either side of the 'circle' to allow for distancing. Then they must jump over the rope every time it comes to them. If they hit the rope, they are out.</p>

11 Best Low And No-Contact Outdoor Games For Kids

<p>Learning the basics of tennis is not hard, and it's a game that you can start to learn to play whatever your age. If you are lucky enough to have some outside space to use - you don't need a tennis court - we've put together some simple exercises to teach you how to learn tennis for beginners or to keep your skills up to match condition while you're at home if you already know the basics. Great for both kids and adults to join in.</p><h2>What you'll need</h2><p>If you have tennis rackets and balls, brilliant. If not, maybe you have a badminton set or a beach tennis set you could utilise. A foam ball will be perfect, especially if your outside space is limited. You don't need a tennis court to make your first steps into the world of Andy Murray!</p><h2>Starting out without a racket</h2><p>This is for two people. We are not going to even use the racket! This is the ideal way to start off beginners, so that they can learn how hitting the ball can affect the way it moves.</p><p><strong>Easy:</strong> Use a garden bench to roll the ball between you, using the flat of the hand. You can try different techniques to see how the ball moves. Try using a a short push, try with a firm wrist, try with a floppy hand. This helps the children learn how the ball acts when it is hit differently.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> Next try to push down on the ball as you push it, getting some spin on it.</p><p><strong>Harder:</strong> Try the same drill using rackets - but don't hit too hard!</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Understanding how different tennis strokes will affect how the ball moves.</p><p>Watch this video from Feeltennis.net to see this in action.</p><h2>Balance the ball</h2><p>This is a great game of balance - and a chance to have some fun being competitive before you learn to play tennis! It's a bit like the egg and spoon race, but using balls and racket in place of eggs and spoons.</p><p><strong>Easy:</strong> Hold the racket out in front of you and balance a ball on top. Then try walking up and down the garden or 'court'.</p><p><strong>Medium: </strong>Pick up the pace and see if you can run without dropping the ball!</p><p><strong>Harder:</strong> See what other exercises you can do without dropping the ball. Try some squats, try touching your toes - see what else the children can come up with. Each circle should have the same number of markers, as you will use these to keep score.</p><p><strong>Easy:</strong> This is a game for two people. The aim of the game is to throw the ball and get it in the circle. You get a point each time the ball lands in the circle. Then your opponent throws the ball back. Turn over a marker each time you score a point - first one to turn over all markers wins the game.</p><p><strong>Medium: </strong>When you have got the hand of that, use your racket to hit the ball into the circle. Again, you get a point each time it goes in the circle.</p><p><strong>Hard: </strong>Now, you will try to to hit the ball back when your opponent has hit it into your circle.</p><h2>Practise ball control</h2><p><strong>Easy: </strong>Use the racket to bounce the ball on the floor. Try to do five, then 10, then 20 or more bounces in a row.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> Keep bouncing the ball and move, using side steps, from side to side. You could place two cones, plant pots or jumpers, and get the kids to move between them.</p><p><strong>Harder:</strong> Instead of stopping at each cone, now go round the cone and back the other way, so you are moving in a figure of eight.</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Hand-eye co-ordination, ball control.</p><h2>Do tennis keepie uppies</h2><p>Easy: These are the keepie uppies of the tennis world! Hold the racket with the hitting side facing up and bounce the ball up and down. Maybe try 10 at a time. Too easy? Try hitting the ball up a little higher! Too hard? Allow a bounce on the floor between each racket hit.</p><p><strong>Medium skill: </strong>Now you've mastered that, let's make it a bit trickier. Twist your wrist so you are using the other side of the racket. Carry out the same drill.</p><p><strong>Hard skill:</strong> And now for the clever bit, hit the ball on the hitting side, then twist the rack to the other side. Keep alternating and hitting the ball! It helps the player get a feel for holding the racket.</p><p><strong>Easy:</strong> Start off with a bean bag or similar and place it on your racket, then throw it to the other player. The other player catches it, and then throws it back. See how many times you can do this without dropping it.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> Replace the bean bag with a ball. Throw the ball to the other player, but let the ball bounce on the floor in between.</p><p><strong>Harrder: </strong>Throw the ball between players, throwing and catching without letting the ball bounce or drop.</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Balance and co-ordination.</p><h2>Play shirt ball</h2><p>This is a fun game to play. Everyone wears an oversized T-shirt - put the kids in one of mum's or dad's for a laugh.</p><p><strong>Easy: </strong>Throw the ball and the player must catch it with the shirt, using it like a bowl.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> Set up a net or rope and throw the ball over the net. The player must let the ball bounce and then catch it.</p><p><strong>Hard: </strong>This time, throw the ball overthe net and the player must catch the ball without letting it bounce.</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Hand-eye co-ordination, agility.</p><h2>Do some fancy footwork</h2><p>Get someone to throw the ball for you for this exercise, and then you can swop places.</p><p>The ball thrower throws the ball to either side of the 'receiver'. &nbsp;The receiver must use side steps to catch the ball and get back to their original spot.</p><p><strong>Easy: </strong>The thrower throws the ball to one side. After five throws, they throw to the other side.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> The thrower alternates between sides, one to the right, one to the left.</p><p><strong>Harder:</strong> The throwers changes sides randomly, sometimes throwing the ball closer or further away. You could also draw one on a hard surface using the kids chalk, or perhaps mark one out with rope or tape or ribbon. Get them to bunny hop the ladder, run up and down in between the rungs, or do 'hopscotch' inside and outside the rungs.</p><h2>Repeat this throwing skill</h2><p>Throwing the ball up for the serve looks easy when the professionals do it, but it is not as easy as it looks. You can practise this with or without a racket, as all you are going to do is throw the ball up.</p><p>Use your non-racket hand and practise throwing the tennis ball up straight up and catching it with your palm up and your arm extended. Keep your eye on the ball at all times.</p><p>Practise 20 times in a row.</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Improving your serve.<br>&nbsp;</p><h2>Make use of a wall</h2><p>If you're lucky enough to have a wall of a garage or the side of the house, this is the perfect way to play tennis on your own.</p><p><strong>Easy: </strong>You can practise your forehand on the wall, just aiming to get the ball back each time.</p><p><strong>Medium:</strong> Hit the ball forehand and then return it with your backhand,</p><p><strong>Hard:</strong> Draw some targets on the wall and challenge yourself to hit them in turn. Or mark each target with 1, 2, 3, points and challenge yourself to get up to 10 or 20!</p><p><strong>Good for:</strong> Learning how to position the ball and run for it too!</p><h2>Brush up your backhand</h2><p>This is a drill you can do on your own or with another player. Get out the Swingball and use it to work on hitting &nbsp;backhand. If someone is helping you, get them to hit the ball to you forehand, so you have to hit it using your backhand.</p><p>If you don't have a swingball, hang a sheet across the washing line, or across the front of a football goal, and hit your tennis balls into this. A great way to practise without losing them over next-door's garden! The idea is to swing the racket from your shoulder in a C shape, strike the ball and follow through, with the racket ending over the opposite shoulder.</p><p>If you don't have room for hitting, simply shadow the stroke - this means practising the movement of the stroke without hitting a ball.</p><h2>Play across a net</h2><p>You need some kind of a net to play tennis. Set up a net in your garden - if you have a tennis or badminton set that includes one, that's brilliant, if not, find some rope to tie between two fences/trees if you can. If not, you'll have to mark out a 'net' using whatever you can find - just so there is a mark that divides the two halves of your 'court'.</p><p>Set up some rallies - where you keep hitting the ball to each other, without it hitting the ground. This will be easiest with a soft ball if you have one, especially for beginners. It also works better on grass, as the ball won't be very bouncy. If you have a large patio or drive area with a hard surface, you can allow the ball to hit the floor before bouncing.</p><p>Challenge yourselves to keep a rally going - three, five, 10, even 20 times. See how far you can go!</p><h2>Learn tennis scoring</h2><p>You don't need to get too complicated to start with. This is the simple way to learn how the scoring works.</p><p>First point won is 15, next one is 30, next is 40 and then you win the game.</p><p>If one player has no point, it's called love. So one-nil in football terms is 15-love in tennis.</p><p>If it's a draw at one point it's 15-all, at two points it's 30-all and 40-all is called deuce.</p><p>When the players are at deuce, they must win two further points to win.</p><p>So if the score is deuce and player one wins a point, it is called 'advantage'. If they lose the next point it goes back to deuce, but if &nbsp;they win the next point they win the game. You can go back to deuce as many times as necessary.</p><h2>Follow some online coaching</h2><p>There are lots of videos on Youtube where you can get some more ideas on how to learn tennis from professional coaches.
