<p>There's so much to do at the Barbican - all free. Here’s Kidadl's guide to why the Barbican Centre is an absolute must-visit for a family day out.</p><h2>1. It’s a hidden oasis full of tropical plants and secret walkways.</h2><p>Rather than being hidden away in the bowels of the building, the Barbican Centre's stairwell was designed to be a big feature. Surrounded by glass all the way to the top, you can walk up and take in 180-degree views, including St Giles Cripplegate church, which survived the Blitz and is one of the few remaining medieval churches in the City of London. Walk up to Level 2 and you’ll find access to the walkways - follow the yellow brick line and wander around the Barbican Estate, taking in the views and post-war brutalist architecture. With no cars and very few people around, it’s perfect for letting the kids run - or scoot - around and explore. Make the most of Sunday and head to the Barbican Conservatory Terrace on Level 4 to discover more than 2,000 tropical plants.</p><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:100%;"><img src="https://media.kidadl.com/tropical_plants_in_barbican_centre_7194ad571a.jpg"></figure><h2>2. Level G&nbsp;is the place to be</h2><p>The Barbican is a perfect rainy day option - you could easily spend a whole afternoon milling around Level G with the kids. There’s Squish Space, a free sensory play session for under 5s, Rhymetime on most Fridays, and the Curve art gallery, all of which are free. The Curve gallery also holds special family days, encouraging younger visitors to engage with the exhibition. You are welcome to bring your own food and have lunch on one of the tables or sofa areas, and there’s also free wi-fi. Kids eat free!</h2><p>Feeding everyone can add a huge expense to your day, but there are a couple of great options here, including kids eat free deals. Head to the Barbican Kitchen on Level G for pizza or a super-healthy buffet lunch - kids under 12 eat free and if the weather’s good you can sit outside on the Lakeside Terrace. Or go to Bonfire on Level 4 for a burger with a view - they also run kids eat free offers and have a table football to play on. You don’t have to walk through the shop on the way out.</h2><p>There is a beautiful shop on Level G selling a curated selection of books, prints, jewellery by up and coming design houses, as well as some smaller items for kids, but it’s positioned in such a way that you can totally avoid it if you want to. There’s no sign of the dreaded ‘pocket money toy’ section and you don’t have to walk through it on your way out. 11 Fantastic October Half-Term Deals to Book Now

<p>London Transport Museum in Covent Garden will reopen on 7 September… and it has some good news for those of us who already have annual passes.</p><p>If, like me, you renewed your annual pass to the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/london-transport-museum">London Transport Museum</a> just before lockdown, you might have muttered a grumble or two at the misfortune.</p><p>Standard entry tickets get an adult and children into the museum an unlimited number of times for a year. They’re not cheap at £18.50 a pop, when other London museums are free. But kids (and adults) adore the place and you soon feel that you’ve got your money’s-worth.&nbsp;</p><p>At least, you do if the museum is actually open. Forced lockdown has left many parents thinking they wouldn’t see the full benefit of their ticket price. I’d mentally written it off as a donation to a much cherished museum that’s going to struggle financially in the months ahead.</p><p>But good news: the museum is not only reopening on 7 September, but it has also announced an extension for current ticket holders. Annual passes will be honoured for a further five months from the current expiry date. According to the museum’s website, “You do not need to do anything further as this update will be done automatically by our bookings team.”</p><p>As with almost all museums, you’ll need to prebook a slot. If you already have an annual pass, just choose the “book timed tickets” option. If not, use “buy admission tickets”. Entry gets you unlimited time in the museum.</p><p>The vast majority of the museum, as well as the superb cafe and shop, will be open as usual. However, the All Aboard play area must remain closed, and you’ll not be allowed to clamber onto the buses. Sadly, the popular stamp trail will also be out of action. Using virtual reality, you’ll be guided through an astronauts long and difficult 400km journey back to earth from the International Space Station. This uses the same system that actual astronauts use to train for their missions and you’ll have real-life astronaut, Tim Peake, guiding you through the whole thing.<br></p><h2 data-header-link="The Big Barbican Adventure">The Big Barbican Adventure</h2><p>This is a family-friendly free discovery trail at The <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/barbican-centre">Barbican Centre</a>, designed specifically for little explorers and adventurers. Once you’ve completed the puzzles, games and drawings, head back to the information desk for a mystery prize! The trail lasts about an hour and is a great way to see the brilliant labyrinth that is The <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/barbican-centre">Barbican Centre</a>.<br></p><h2 data-header-link="The View From The Shard">The View From The Shard</h2><p>You can see the Shard from most places in central London and you can see most of central London from the Shard! Why not head up there this weekend for a different view of the city? The kids won’t be able to believe how high they are, we just hope you’re not scared of heights! Whatever the weather, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/the-shard">the Shard</a> is a great option for the whole family.<br></p><h2 data-header-link="Tibits">Tibits</h2><p>Even if you’re not vegan or vegetarian, Tibits is a great restaurant whether you’re after breakfast, lunch or dinner! It’s buffet style and with over 40 dishes to choose from, the kids will have a great time choosing the most colourful and exciting looking options. Things To Do This Weekend, 2nd-3rd November

<p>Ahoy there! </p><p>Today we went on <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/event/city-cruises-london">a boating adventure</a> taking in the sights and sounds of London on a Thames River Cruise. My husband and I took the day off work and went with my four-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.</p><p>We set sail from Westminster pier which was easy to find and signed posted straight from Westminster tube station. So far, so easy for little hyper-mobile legs.<br></p><p>We picked up our tickets from the ticket office. There were lots of tourist groups milling around and it was quite difficult to find the exact ticket booth we needed. There was some confusion here and lots of people not quite knowing which boat was going in which direction. <br></p><p>Eventually we found our boat and boarded quickly. As it was a beautiful sunny day we sat on top of the large vessel and there was plenty of free seating. The crew did a little safety announcement and then went on to say that although they would be doing the commentary they are not professional tour guides only crew members. Given this was a sightseeing tour I did think there was a little disappointing to find out that you just have someone random reading off a badly written script. However the script was quite funny although crude in places and not necessarily appropriate for very young children. My six-year-old did comment that the man talking was pretty annoying as it was quite loud and it went on virtually the whole boat journey. Obviously it was absolutely fine for us but just to mention the commentary was completely in English with no option to listen in any other languages. Once the commentary had ended the crew came round with a bucket taking tips! The pace was gentle if a little slow at &nbsp;Times as we headed towards Greenwich. The stretch of river between Westminster and Greenwich however is packed full of tourist sites - we saw the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/london-eye">London Eye</a>, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/tower-bridge">Tower Bridge</a>, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/tate-modern">Tate Modern</a>, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/the-shard">The Shard</a>, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/st-pauls-cathedral">St Paul’s Cathedral</a>, Millennium Bridge, <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/tower-of-london">Tower of London</a>,&nbsp;Cleopatra‘s needle and lots more besides that you would never really get to see from that vantage point unless you are cruising down the river. <br></p><p>My six-year-old was engaged throughout though I have to say my four-year-old was at times more interested in his snacks.<br></p><p>Speaking of snacks there was a fully stocked bar on board with crisps, snacks, hot drinks and alcohol plus there are plenty of big toilets male and female and disabled, clean-ish and fully functioning. There was also a large space downstairs inside for buggy parking. <br></p><p>We arrived at Greenwich at 12 and headed straight for the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/venue/cutty-sark">Cutty Sark</a> which is right by where the boat docks. Having taken a cruise on a boat, visited a giant moored boat and made paper boats we all feel like we’ve had a very boaty day!</p>
