<p>Seaside holidays might get all the press but you’re likely to find yourself sharing space with hundreds of other families. Pick a quiet place in the countryside, however, and you could have hundreds of acres of rural landscape almost entirely to yourself. The options on where to go are legion -- just find an under-explored corner of the country and you’ll readily find accommodation listed online. But what should you take and what can you actually do in the countryside?</p><h2 data-header-link="What You’ll Need">What You’ll Need</h2><p>If you’re staying in a holiday cottage, or something similar, then you can pretty much pack as though you were travelling to a hotel. But be sure to check what’s included with the accommodation owner. For example, most places will supply stuff like plates, pans, cutlery and glassware, but not everywhere will offer towels. Some may have cots available on request while others will expect you to take a travel cot. Think of everything your family will need, and make sure it’s either packed or on the ‘supplied’ list.</p><p>You’ll want to do plenty of exploring during your stay, so pack a few items to make that more fun and pleasurable. A good map is essential. While most rural areas now have decent phone and GPS coverage, you’re guaranteed to hit a black spot at the very moment you find yourself lost. OS maps show public footpaths that might be absent from apps and online maps. Plus, it’s both fun and educational for kids to follow a paper map.</p><p>Make sure everyone’s got a good water bottle. Places to refill or buy can be hard to come by when out and about in the countryside, especially with many small businesses struggling to reopen in the wake of coronavirus.&nbsp;</p><p>Insect spray, suncream and a first aid kit are also advisable contents of any hiker’s rucksack. What else you take depends on your spirit of adventure. Binoculars, wildlife guides, a compass… just remember you have to carry all this stuff.&nbsp;</p><p>What you might <em>not</em> need to take is entertainment. Almost any holiday cottage will come loaded with rainy day stuff… books, DVDs, board games, plain old television. Again, check ahead to be sure. Not every holiday home will have internet access… which might be a good thing if you want a break from the screen.</p><p>Food is rarely an issue. Most accommodation will provide information on local shops and supermarkets that do delivery. But it wouldn’t hurt to check out the local resources online, ahead of the holiday.</p><h2 data-header-link="What To Do">What To Do</h2><p>You’re in the middle of the countryside with your family. What can you do? Britain is criss-crossed with signposted walking routes, from the ‘mainline’ routes like National Trails, to less-celebrated local pathways. Plan a circular walk that takes in one or more of these. Alternatively, get creative with the kids, and plot out your own route following public footpaths and country lanes, using the OS map for inspiration.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Set a wildlife challenge</strong>: Get the kids taking a deep look at nature by setting them wild missions. Who can find and photograph three types of mushroom? How many species of bird or butterfly can you spot in one day? Or prepare a ‘bingo card’ of 15 things they have to look out for while out.</p><p><strong>Explore the local area</strong>: Most holiday homes come with a teetering pile of leaflets advertising local attractions. Make the most of them -- though be sure to check ahead to ensure the venue has reopened.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Get stuck in to farm work</strong>: Some smaller farms offer working farm holidays, during which you and the kids can get properly stuck into the rural life, helping out with animal feeding and other farm tasks. The numbers seem to have diminished in the wake of coronavirus, but some are still operating.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Trapped indoors?&nbsp;</strong>Of course, you might get unlucky and hit a week full of rain. There are ways to turn this into a positive, though. How about staging an <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/indoor-family-picnic-ideas">indoor picnic</a>, or assembling an <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/create-your-own-indoor-beach-at-home">undercover beach</a>? Everybody would like Britain’s green and pleasant lands to be open to those who want to explore. But it’s important to remember that much of the countryside is also a workplace. Whenever we walk through rural areas, we should be mindful and respectful to both the natural world, and the working rural world. To help, the Countryside Code sets out the dos and don’ts of taking your family out of the town.<br></p><p>* Always leave gates as you find them. Usually, they should be closed, but a gate may have been left open for a reason.</p><p>* Stick to designated footpaths (marked on OS maps and many mapping apps). Don’t go off the track unless a notice says you can. This is especially important when walking beside or through crop fields.</p><p>* Leave no trace of your visit, and take all litter home.</p><p>* Never touch or feed livestock (unless you’re with the farmer). If an animal appears to be in distress, contact a farmer rather than trying to intervene yourself.</p><p>* Give animals plenty of space, especially if they have young, or if you have a dog (see below).</p><p>* Cycling? By law, you have to give way to walkers and those on horses.</p><p>* Plan ahead. Some rural areas may have restricted access during seasonal work, or through local conditions such as flooding.</p><h2 data-header-link="Taking The Family Dog?">Taking The Family dog?</h2><p>Many holiday homes will allow your canine companion to join you -- though not all. Be sure to check ahead before turning up with fido.&nbsp;</p><p>While out and about, dogs should be kept under control, especially in areas containing livestock. This is not just good practice, but the law. Dogs must be on short leads in the open country between 1 March 1 and 31 July 31 (a law designed to help nesting birds), and always when around farm animals. Dogs that injure or harass livestock are at the mercy of the law, and could be put down.</p><p>You’ll also need to consider the poo. It’s very important to clear up any mess to avoid spreading disease (look up Neosporosis, though not while you’re eating your lunch). Make sure you’ve brought some kind of sealable container in which to carry the smelly deposits. Unlike your local park, the open countryside does not always contain bins for dog mess. You may need to carry the feculent package some distance, so have a good think about how best to do that in a safe and sanitary way.</p><h2 data-header-link="Driving?">Driving?</h2><p>The rules of the road are exactly the same in the countryside as in a city centre. However, rural areas throw up all kinds of hazards you wouldn’t encounter on the North Circular. If you’ve never driven in the countryside before, it pays to think ahead and consider the following situations.</p><p><strong>Narrow roads</strong>: Many rural roads are narrow; not much wider than a single vehicle. Keep your speed down, especially when approaching bends. Look ahead and try to spot the next passing point -- a short section where it’s possible to pull in and let oncoming traffic pass.</p><p><strong>Scratchy, bumpy roads</strong>: If you’re lucky enough to drive a sleek, expensive sports car, you might want to leave it at home. Roads in the countryside are often bumpy, pothole-filled, waterlogged or otherwise out of peak condition. You might also consider your options if you’re precious about your car’s paintwork. The narrow tracks can force you tight against hedges. Rub a hawthorn at speed, and you’re going to see scratches.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Other road users</strong>: Few country roads have paving for walkers, and many lack even a grassy verge. Walkers will commonly take to the road. Keep this in mind when you go around every corner, and slow to a crawl on the tightest bends. Likewise, cyclists and horse riders make good use of rural roads, and should be given as much space as possible. Drive particularly slowly near horses, and look out for manure on the road as a sign they might be ahead. Never try to overtake anywhere near a bend.</p><p><strong>Tractors</strong>: It goes without saying that you’re likely to encounter rural vehicles in the countryside. Have patience if you find yourself behind a slow-moving tractor -- they usually don’t travel very far before turning off again. Watch out, too, for vehicles pulling out of farm tracks. Most turnings will be signposted with a ‘Concealed entrance’ hazard warning, but not always.</p><p><strong>Animals in the road</strong>: Look out for animals in the road. Hundreds of people are injured in the UK each year following collisions with animals, and a handful of deaths also sadly occur. You never know what you might meet. Pheasants, deer, sheep, badgers, foxes… all come and go at their own whim. Drive cautiously, paying particular attention after warning roadsigns. If you do hit an animal, whether it is killed or injured, you may have a legal obligation to report the incident to the police. This applies for dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and mules. Cats are, for some reason, not on the list, though you may want to do the decent thing and check if the stricken animal has a contact number on its collar.</p><p><strong>Driving at night</strong>: Use full-beam headlights on country roads. You won’t find many street lights, and you’ll need all the illumination you can get to spot the hazards noted above. Remember to dip the lights when approaching an oncoming car so as not to dazzle the driver.</p><h2 data-header-link="Do It The Easy Way">Do It The Easy Way</h2><p>Finally, if the idea of a full-on countryside holiday still seems a little daunting, then consider a compromise closer to home. Glamping is always an option, with many semi-rural sites across the UK that are comfortably close to towns and cities. Some of these can be enormous fun, too. How about glamping in a <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/unusual-family-holidays-uk">converted double-decker, or a UFO, or even a helicopter</a>?</p>

You can then give this to them on their 18th or 21st birthday. Children don't currently have access to their P.E lessons at school and parents don't have access to gyms. We can get so lost in work that we forget how long it has been since we've talked to old friends or cousins that at some point in our lives meant so much to us. If it's been really long then it could be really interesting to see how they're getting on; they could have children the same age as your own children, they could have stories about your old school, they could share good resources for things to do at home. There's never any harm picking up the phone or sending an email to an old friend. An email to an old friend could also really brighten their day and boost their mental wellbeing, which is a great thing to do especially if their stay at home experience has been particularly difficult.</p><h2 data-header-link="Create A Bucket List">Create A Bucket List</h2><p>With the current guidelines affecting our summer plans, they've also given us time to slow down and to have a think about what really matters to us. With that in mind, this could be a good time to reflect and think about all the things you'd like to do once the stay at home guidelines are over and while your children are still young. This list could include places you want to visit and the skills you want to learn. You could start ticking off some of these items while we're at home by leaning a language for your next adventure. </p>

<p>We’re used to hearing how many “shopping days are left till Christmas”. During lockdown, with non-essential stores closed, it’s more of a “non-shopping days” countdown. But high streets <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/end-of-lockdown-2-what-new-rules-mean-for-families" target="_blank">should reopen from 2 December</a>, and the race is on to get all the gifts, foods and decorations we need (and many we don’t). How are you doing the Christmas shopping?<br></p><h2 data-header-link="Everything Online!">Everything Online!</h2><p>Online shopping has been growing steadily for years but has seen a boom this year. So much so that delivery firms are struggling to cope with the demand. You may have noticed your parcels taking a little longer to reach you, as couriers are stretched thin. The system may buckle further with Black Friday leading us into the peak shopping season of December.</p><p>If you are ordering online, it’ll pay to do so as early as possible to take account of delays. And think beyond a certain company named after a major river. Consider ordering from smaller shops and local businesses, who sorely need our support after the devastating effects of lockdown. “Lots of shops [are] doing click and collect now,” <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/Kiddoofamilyfun/permalink/4064602283554354" target="_blank">says Kidadlr Judy</a>. “Seems [to be the] best of both worlds -- supporting local shops but avoiding crowds.” Sites like Etsy are a great place to find unique gifts from talented, independent makers. For books, the recently launched Bookshop.org offers millions of titles, with profits going to small independent booksellers rather than a multinational.</p><h2 data-header-link="Try Kidadl’s Gift Guides">Try Kidadl’s Gift Guides</h2><p>While you’re shopping online, take a look at our <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/best-buys-lists/gift-kids-products" target="_blank">handpicked gift-guides</a>. We’ve got recommended gifts for all ages, as well as handy <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/search?query=best+christmas" target="_blank">Christmas lists</a> (santa hats, jumpers, stocking fillers, decorations… you name it).&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="Down The Supermarket">Down The Supermarket</h2><p>While the high street has remained closed, shops selling food have been permitted to stay open. Many of us have been relying more on the big supermarkets for our Christmas shopping. We should do so with caution, however. Part of the point of lockdown is that we minimise time spent in indoor public spaces, and that includes supermarkets. Lingering in the book aisle, handling toys and perusing the perfumes all add to the collective risk. Garden centres are also allowed to continue trading during lockdown, and can be excellent places to find gifts.</p><h2 data-header-link="Wait Until The High Street Reopens">Wait Until The High Street Reopens</h2><p>Many people prefer to shop in person rather than ordering online. The reopening of non-essential shops in England from 2 December will be a welcome development, both to the retailers themselves and to their patient customers. But it also comes with a risk. Christmas shopping is always a busy, bustling affair. It attracts crowds, and crowds are dangerous right now. Expect long, socially distanced queues to form outside the more popular retailers so that numbers inside can be restricted. Try to shop during weekdays rather than the busier weekends. And shop alone if you can, rather than taking the family <em>en masse</em>.&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="How Will You Shop?">How Will You Shop?</h2><p>We asked the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/Kiddoofamilyfun/permalink/4064602283554354" target="_blank">Kidadl Facebook group</a> how they were planning on doing the Christmas shopping. The results were interesting (though not scientific). The overwhelming majority of responders to the poll said they’d be doing all their shopping online (64 votes). Not this year. <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/how-will-your-family-christmas-be-different-this-year" target="_blank">With lockdowns</a>, social distancing and a universal need for a bit of joy, it’s surely time to get started with the Christmas plans. Here are seven things to think about right now, so you don’t get caught out come December.</p><h2 data-header-link="1. Do Your Christmas Shopping NOW If You Can">1. Do Your Christmas Shopping NOW If You Can</h2><p>For obvious reasons, Christmas shopping is likely to be more fraught than usual this year. Readers in England are currently in a lockdown, with non-essential shops (like toy shops, gift shops and book shops) closed until early December. When they do reopen, shops will be in high demand. Given current social distancing guidelines, that means queues. Wherever you live, visiting the shops in December is going to come with a raft of complications.</p><p>We can do two things right now. First, consider getting gifts from your supermarket, if you’re heading there for groceries anyhow. These remain open in the English lockdown, and sell many of the items you might otherwise have gone to the high street for. The other advantage is that you’re not making additional trips, which reduces the risk of picking up or spreading infection.&nbsp;Just remember not to linger in the aisles (think about what you might want to buy in advance), and try not to touch anything you aren't going to buy.</p><p>Second, you might want to do most or all of your gift buying online this year. As well as being a safer option, this is also a good way to help smaller businesses who offer delivery services. The smart online shopper does so in November,&nbsp;as the increased demand for deliveries in December might cause delays.&nbsp;</p><h2 data-header-link="2. Get The Advent Calendar Sorted">2. Get The Advent Calendar Sorted</h2><p>Pretty obvious one, but 1 December can easily creep up on you before you know it. You have three choices for advent calendars: buy one, make one, or reuse the one from last year. If you want to buy one, then you have plenty to choose from. The supermarkets seem to have an abundance of options this year, from themed Lego calendars (with a brickish gift each day), to reading calendars that furnish you with a tiny book each morning. The usual mix of chocolate-bearing calendars are also stocked in excelsis.&nbsp;</p><p>Making an advent calendar can be a lot of fun. The simplest form is to draw 24 small pictures onto half a side of A3 paper, fold it over, then cut windows into the other half. But you can also make gift-laden calendars by using small numbered boxes. Recycling last year’s calendar would get you top marks from an environmental perspective, but may not be the most popular decision with the little ones.</p><h2 data-header-link="3. Get The Christmas Pudding Furtling">3. A good pudding made a month or so before Christmas will have time to mature, giving a richer, fruitier taste. The ‘proper’ time to do this is the penultimate Sunday in November -- this year it’s the 22nd -- which is known as Stir-up Sunday. It comes with a barrel of Victorian tradition, too. By custom, every member of the household should take a turn to stir the cake mixture, which should contain precisely 13 ingredients. You might want to avoid the tradition of baking a coin into the pud, though, unless you want a dessert imbued with grime and choking hazard.</p><h2 data-header-link="4. Make Your Cards">4. Make Your Cards</h2><p>The postal service is likely to be in higher demand than ever this year, with so many people getting their shopping by delivery. Getting your cards ready early would be a good move. You could even turn it into a family craft project. Cards are easy to make, and are open to creativity. Use coloured paper, foil, felt, paint, cross-stitch… whatever you like… to make a Christmas scene. Just remember that you may need a bigger envelope and more stamps if your creations get too unwieldy. Another option is to buy a proper card crafting kit. Most supermarkets stock at least one or two options, and you can easily order online.</p><h2 data-header-link="5. Deck The Halls">5. If you have difficulties with this, you could bundle the nappies in groups of three or four first. Repeat the process with 11 nappies for the middle tier and four nappies for the top tier. </p><p>3) Fold the baby blanket width-wise into a 'ribbon' the same height as your nappies, and wrap it around the bottom tier of your nappy cake. Fasten it with some satin ribbon, secure it with a bow. </p><p>4) Repeat this process with the shawl and wrap it around the middle tier of your cake, then with the bib which you will wrap around the top tier. Secure each layer with a neat satin bow. </p><p>5) To assemble your nappy cake, pile the middle tier on top of your bottom layer, and the smallest layer right at the top. To secure it in place, use three wooden skewers or sticks and insert them through each layer of your nappy cake. </p><p>6) Decorate the nappy cake with all the other toys and accessories: roll the baby socks to form rosebud shapes and bunch up the baby wash cloths to form flowers for example. Place those and the dummy, the bottle, the hairbrush and cutlery, the toys on the different tiers of your cake. This could include tooth authenticity, price, quality of the tooth and can be signed by the tooth fairy to add a personal touch. This is a completely different letter from the tooth fairy!</p><p><strong>Equipment:</strong></p><p>Paper.</p><p>Pen.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong></p><p>Cut a rectangular shape as if it were a receipt. At the top of the receipt write the name of your fairy kingdom, in the position of a retailer normally. Beneath this, place the address of your chosen fairy kingdom. The phrase 'you can't be it if you can't see it' is often used to emphasise the need for representation, and it is true. Children with role models who look like them are far more likely to pursue those careers and seek certain experiences when they can see others like them actively participating in that role. It is up to us as parents, teachers and caregivers to make sure that positive representation is readily available.</p><p>Research has shown that at only six months old, babies can recognise cultural diversity from skin tone and hair texture. It is important for your toy box to reflect this, but if you live in a primarily white area then it is even more so. Living in parts of London and other large cities, it is likely that your kids will see people from varying ethnic backgrounds daily. There will already be less of a sense of 'otherness'. However living in less diverse places, with classrooms made up of mostly white students and teachers, our children will not get a true sense of diversity and will automatically assume whiteness is the default. </p><p>Representation is<strong> so</strong> important for children, for their sense of self, learning about who they are and what they want to aspire to, and for developing confidence too. Toys that represent your child and their friendship group foster this sense of seeing themselves reflected in the world. &nbsp;If your child has seven baby dolls and they are all white, this is not representative of our wider community. But by diversifying your toy box, you will be actively encouraging and nurturing an inclusive outlook on the world. </p><h2 data-header-link="Where Can Parents Find Diverse Toys?"><strong>Where can parents find diverse toys?</strong></h2><p>If possible when shopping for diverse and multicultural toys (and shopping in general), you can also apply a diverse attitude to <strong>where</strong> you shop. Shopping locally and supporting small businesses is a great place to start, as well as researching business and companies with ethical and diverse practices. Etsy and Instagram are an excellent resource for finding these kinds of shops and businesses. Often the price points for small businesses are a little higher, and with ethical manufacturing too, but many mainstream shops are responding to demand and starting to supply a more diverse range. Even with a modest budget, you should be able to expand your kids' toy collection. </p><h2 data-header-link="Examples Of Diverse Toys"><strong>Examples of diverse toys</strong></h2><p>You do not need to try and alter your child's playing style. By simply adding to their collection, help them to learn about inclusivity, and why you want to make sure they have an exciting range of toys. </p><p>If your child loves Barbie or Bratz, make sure to include some dolls of colour with different hair textures. The same goes for Lego, and Playmobil, for example. Kids love to make up games and little scenarios, so although not every single game should be a 'lesson' there are ample opportunities to educate through play. </p><p>When we are so used to seeing one option all the time, it can be surprising once you begin to learn how little diversity has actually been considered by mainstream toy companies. The Importance Of Diverse Toys And Where To Find Them

<p>Now that face masks are being made compulsory in certain places, it's helpful to know how to make your own from home.</p><p>Making your own COVID face covering is surprisingly easy, uses minimal materials and can even be jazzed up using patterns of your choice. Follow the simple steps below to make your own face masks for the family and help stop the spread of COVID this summer.</p><p>These instructions are for a simple cloth face mask using hairbands or elastic, but there are a few other versions you can try such as the t shirt or bandanna method.</p><p>1. Cut two 10" x 6" rectangles from cotton fabric. The thicker the material the better - if you can see through it when held up to the light, your material is too thin.</p><p>2. Place the rectangles on top of one another with a sheet of kitchen towel cut to size and tucked between the two.</p><p>3. Fold the bottom edges in a 1/4 inch to create a hem, then sew along this line. Leave the top open to carefully remove the kitchen towel before washing (replacing it with a fresh one before wearing your mask again).</p><p>4. Place a hairband around each of the shorter ends with the fabric tucked just inside, then fold the fabric around the elastic to create another small hem.</p><p>5. These will be your ear loops - sew them in place along this fold.</p><p>6. If your hairbands aren't tight enough to secure your mask, you can snip them so you have two strands of elastic then retie into as tight a knot as you need so that your mask comfortably stays in place. Homemade face masks can be washed with other items using your usual detergent.</p><p>It's a good idea to have more than one mask so that you swap them around whilst one is being washed.</p><p>Do not share your mask with others.</p>

<p>Shops are open again, and as much as we might be dreading it, shopping needs to be done. </p><p>Though most of us are now well-versed in socially-distanced grocery shopping, the reopening of other retail stores makes it necessary to revisit government guidelines. What safety measures will be in place and what's worth knowing before you go? </p><p>Here is everything you need to know about shopping with the kids, from books and clothes to stationery and school uniforms.</p><h2 data-header-link="What Has Reopened?">What Has Reopened? </h2><p>As of Monday 15 June, an array of different retail outlets have been allowed to resume business. These include: </p><ul><li>Clothes shops</li><li>Toy shops</li><li>Book shops</li><li>Department stores</li><li>Electronic retailers</li><li>Charity shops</li><li>Tailors</li><li>Indoor and outdoor markets </li><li>Photography studios </li><li>Auction houses<br></li></ul><p>Bear in mind that, although these shops are allowed to reopen, it doesn't mean your local branch definitely will. To avoid scenes, run through the guidelines with your kids before you leave. </p><ul><li>Remind your children of the importance of social distancing. </li><li>Remind your children not to touch anything in shops.</li><li>Thoroughly wash yours and your children's hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water before leaving the house. </li><li>Remember to pack hand sanitiser and face coverings if you're getting public transport, or want to be extra cautious. These will be mandatory for anyone 11 years or older, as of 24 July. It might also be a good idea to pack extra snacks for placating young kids. It's more important than ever right now that we complete our shopping quickly and safely. </li><li>If your kids are acting up, consider rearranging your trip, if possible. This often works on a one-in-one-out basis. Queuing will be mandatory outside popular retail stores.</li><li><strong>Hand sanitising stations</strong> will be located at shop entrances -- remember to use them.</li><li><strong>Shopping baskets </strong>will be <strong>sanitised</strong> between uses.</li><li>Floor stickers will be in use at many shops to indicate <strong>one-way systems</strong> and encourage distancing. </li><li>Expect to find <strong>perspex screens </strong>at most tills, installed to prevent the spreading of germs between employee and customer. </li><li>Lots of clothes shops are choosing <strong>not to re-open changing rooms. </strong></li><li>Many retail stores are choosing to reopen with <strong>reduced shopping hours </strong>or <strong>specified time-windows</strong> for certain types of shopping. For example, a book shop may have certain hours allotted for browsing and others for collecting online orders. Remember to check online or by phone before visiting certain shops to avoid a wasted trip. </li><li>You'll be asked to only touch items that you intend to purchase. This isn't always practicable -- for example, you may need to move clothes on a rail to see those behind; or you might need to read the blurb on the back of a book before deciding to purchase. In the latter case, the shop may ask you to place touched books onto a trolley, where they will be kept in a kind of bookish quarantine for a few days, before reshelving.</li><li>Larger stores, such as department stores, may <strong>only be opening certain parts of the shop floor</strong>. </li><li>Some shops will be cashless, so <strong>remember your contactless card</strong>. </li><li>Since 1 April, the <strong>contactless payment limit has been £45</strong> (rather than £30). If you are making a larger payment, consider setting up the <strong>digital wallet on your smartphone</strong>, if you've not already. With this feature, you can pay for any amount by simply holding your smartphone over the card reader, avoiding all physical contact. &nbsp;</li></ul><h2 data-header-link="What About Back-To-School Shopping?">What About Back-To-School Shopping? </h2><p>If you're hoping to get a head start on shopping for back-to-school essentials, here are a few things you should know. </p><ul><li>Many <strong>school uniform shops</strong> are choosing to operate with an <strong>appointments-based system</strong> to prevent crowds. Time slots can usually be booked through their website. </li><li>Although in-store appointments are available, most shops will <strong>not be permitting general browsing</strong> or <strong>clothes fittings</strong>. For this reason, &nbsp;it is a good idea to <strong>take your child's measurements</strong> with a tape measure <strong>before leaving the house </strong>to reduce the likelihood that you will have to return ill-fitting items. Measuring guides can be found on most uniform store websites. Consider making a list of the items you need with the appropriate sizes; this will allow a shop assistant to help you quickly and efficiently and prevent you from coming into unnecessary contact with stock or other customers. </li><li>Shops selling children's shoes are also operating differently. Marks &amp; Spencer has confirmed there will be <strong>no children's shoe fitting</strong> for the time being, whilst Clarks is using <strong>protective fitting screens</strong> and equipment, or else having their fitters <strong>advise customers on how to measure and fit themselves</strong>. &nbsp;</li><li>When buying stationery, remember that many WHSmiths also house Post Offices and are therefore likely to have longer queues. <p>Against an idyllic countryside backdrop, we caught up with blogger Robin Marsden of Peel and Friends to find out about how her family is managing their lockdown house-move. </p><p>Aussie expat Robin has been living in London with her husband and three girls, aged five, four and one, for ten years but finally decided to relocate to the countryside just before the pandemic hit. It's really hard to make sure they’re all getting their own time and space, especially when homeschooling our eldest kind of takes dominance, so the other two sometimes feel a bit put out by that. It works well when my four-year-old can get involved in the school work too if it’s something we know she’ll enjoy and they can do together. That’s really nice to see.”<br></p><h2 data-header-link="Help Siblings Cherish This Chance To Be Together"><strong>Help Siblings Cherish This Chance To Be Together</strong></h2><p>“I don't think you can ensure that siblings will get along, there will always be bickering and arguments, and I think in a way there’s been more of that during lockdown, but there’s also been more of the good stuff. So I try and reflect on the good parts and focus on that. My two older girls are spending a lot of time together and whilst that can be hard, it’s also been really special and I hope they can look back on this time and remember all the fun they had together. Trying to spend specific time with each of them, give them their own attention and make them feel like they're their own little person is harder when you can’t take them out. But it’s also been a really interesting opportunity and I think that time helps the girls feel more confident in their roles in the family and in themselves.”<br></p><h2 data-header-link="Reflect On What Lockdown Has Taught You"><strong>Reflect On What Lockdown Has Taught You</strong></h2><p>“We will be reflecting on how many activities we’re doing and how busy all our lives are. Getting out on our daily walk has been one of the best and most important parts of the day for the kids. It can be quite an expedition getting everyone out the door but once you do it’s so worth it! We’ve also had more time to prepare meals together and eat together - I think kids are more likely to eat and enjoy food if they’ve helped prepare it. The kids are really looking forward to playdates, seeing their friends and that social life - as am I! How To Navigate Life Changes During Lockdown (And Come Out Smiling)

<p>The caravan: Once a staple of every family's annual summer holiday.</p><p>But over the past few decades, caravans have fallen out of favour for cheap flights and all-inclusive deals. With COVID grounding planes and putting a stop to our <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/dig-out-the-passports-heres-where-you-can-head-this-summer" target="_blank">two weeks in the sun</a>, are you tempted to try something different?</p><p>Even as the world starts to reopen there are many people who would feel more comfortable <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles-collection/staycation-and-uk-holiday-ideas" target="_blank">holidaying in their own country</a>, and the humble caravan is just the ticket. It's a travelling hotel on wheels – only with slightly smaller proportions and fewer amenities. Caravanning with kids comes with its own set of unique challenges – namely the lack of space. So, you'll need to embrace the close living style for the bonding experience that it is. </p><p>If you're in a touring caravan it's possible to factor in everyone's wishes for the trip, if you're willing to drive around. You can spend days (and nights) by the sea, 48 hours in the midst of the forest, plus time spent parked up within easy reach of the local city. Plus, any 'I need a wee' cries can be easily solved by pulling into a rest stop and using your own facilities. (Although, please note that at no point can anyone be in the caravan while it is moving!). </p><p>It can be hard to carve out space for each family member so it might be you need to agree that kids can bring their devices and earphones for when they need some time out (remember to pack all the chargers!). There's only one way to know if you can hack two weeks in a caravan with kids and that's to do it. So, you'll be grateful of any extra space. An awning is a great dining spot so you don't have to dismantle beds. It's also a great place to leave muddy boots and soggy coats to keep the caravan clean inside.</p><p><strong>A Cinema Projector: </strong>You can't expect a widescreen, 50" TV in your caravan, but you can still arrange some top-notch family entertainment. All you need is a handy projector and a white sheet. (<em>Top Tip</em>: Depending on sleeping arrangements you could also project films on to the ceiling!). </p><p><strong>A Bed Guard:</strong> Caravan beds can be somewhat slim, and if young children are used to a well-proportioned bed you might be woken by the gentle thud of someone falling out. Take a bed guard with you – or if you're staying on a holiday site you may be able to hire one.</p><p><strong>Extra Towels:</strong> If you're lucky you might have a tiny patch of outside space that you can string your travel washing line up in (what do you mean you didn't pack one?). If not, you'll find yourself towelling off after every shower with a damp towel. Pack extra (bathmats too) so you can avoid this.</p><p><strong>Laundry Powder:</strong> We know you don't want to spend your holiday doing the washing. But, neither do you want to spend it in a steel box with a bag of soiled clothes following any accidents. Take it with you so you have it for emergency clothes washing, and hopefully you won't need it!</p><p><strong>Stairgate:</strong> Unsurprisingly caravans get hot – actually, make that roasting. The windows may also not be the safest option to leave open if kids can climb up to them. But with your baby gate, you can open up the door to let the air in. You'll usually find more space and better quality fixtures and fittings which will make all the difference to the enjoyment of the holiday. If it's a matter of budget think about ditching the option of linen and taking your own bedding instead.</p><p><strong>Packing:</strong> Let the kids do some of the <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/ultimate-camping-checklist-uk-edition-for-families" target="_blank">packing</a> themselves. Hand them a small bag to fill with their favourite toys and books so they have a say. Don't forget to pack a few emergency extras though - no one wants to be the parent who arrives to find their child has opted to bring their entire collection of stones and nothing else!</p><p><strong>Organising: </strong>As soon as you arrive, work out where you'll keep certain items - toys, shoes, coats etc. The success of your caravan holiday lies largely in your ability to make the most of the space you have. The more you can tidy away, the more space you feel like you have. But, owning your own caravan and renting a caravan are two different ball games. With the former, you can fit it out how you like and leave all those essentials in place. When you're ready to go you just need to hitch it up and you're off.</p><p><strong>Is Your Car Capable Of Towing It?</strong></p><p>You'll need to know the caravan's maximum laden weight and your car's approximate kerb weight to check they're compatible. As a rough guide, inexperienced towers should aim for a caravan's maximum laden weight, which is no more than 85 per cent of the car's kerb weight. Even seasoned caravanners should never tow a caravan that weighs more than their car.</p><p><strong>Do You Have Somewhere Secure To Store It?</strong></p><p>If you have the space at home then it makes sense to store your caravan at home – but do make sure it's covered by insurance, and that you're happy to have it in your front or back garden. Do also consider you'll need to be able to hitch it up to a car to move it, so you'll need to ensure appropriate access. For those of us not blessed with space there are lots of secure storage sites across the UK. Things to look for include perimeter protection, CCTV and lighting. Your storage pitch should include public liability and occupier's liability – also check your own insurance that it's covered if in storage away from the home.</p><p><strong>Finding The Best Layout For Your Family</strong></p><p>While there's an obvious appeal to a caravan with a fixed double bed, you might find that it actually gives you less space. If you have more than one child you may be better off for space with everyone sleeping in bunk beds. The beauty of these is they don't need to be packed away each morning. Many are now reopening up from the beginning of July though not all services and facilities may be operating. Our favourites include:</p><p><strong>Tin Can Camping, &nbsp;Norwich</strong></p><p>Kids will go wild for this slice of '50s Americana. They can stay in an Airstream Bubble trailer in a small Norfolk orchard. For summer 2020 you'll be given a timed slot to access the shared facilities to ensure social distancing.</p><p><strong>Black Bull Caravan Park, North Yorkshire</strong></p><p>While the games room remains closed, you can still access the playing field, crazy golf and playground (with some restrictions). You'll be situated at the gateway to the North York Moors too.</p><p><strong>The Old School Campsite, Shropshire</strong></p><p>Hire the glamping caravan with shower room and toilet, or bring your own caravan – the site is now carefully opening back up with Covid-19 safe measures in place. Challenge the family to walk to the top of Corndon Hill for impressive views!</p><p><strong>Wild Duck Holiday Park, Great Yarmouth</strong></p><p>The pools may be out of bounds currently, but there's forest trails and secret wooded clearings to discover. And the beach is close by.</p><p><strong>Lady Mile's Holiday Park, Dawlish, South Devon</strong></p><p>Kids will love the bike pump track, adventure playground, arcade and multi-sports court. Parents will appreciate the Marquee bar and the super-clean facilities.</p>
