Younger children may lack the right communication skills, while teenagers often run to their own agendas. More often than not, you probably respond with a "fine" or "not bad" or even a "can't complain". It's similar to questions like "How are you?", "How's things?" or "Wassup?". The question is usually asked as part of polite small talk, rather than a genuine appeal to learn everything that happened to you today.</p><p>It's the same with kids. You've probably welcomed them home with the same question after every school or kindergarten day for years. Most children will give an "OK" or "fine" or just a grunt, before launching into whatever topic they want to talk about.</p><p>There may be a deeper reason why generic questions don't get an enthusiastic response in smaller children. Their brains haven't yet learned to deal with broad questions. Any meaningful answer to "How was your day?" requires some serious thought and conversation skills. How do you reflect on the hundreds of things that happen in a day, pick out the ones that your parents will be most interested in, then sum it all up for them? It's too much for a young child to parse. Generic questions are not a good way to encourage a child to talk. &nbsp; </p><h2 data-header-link="How Important Is It To Find Out About Their Day?">How Important Is It To Find Out About Their Day?</h2><p>As caring parents, you'll pick up on the general mood of your child, and you should be able to tell if something is playing on their mind. That's a good start, but if you're going to help them work through any problems, you'll need to find out the specifics. </p><p>There's a second reason we ask people about their day, though, and that's to show them we care. Everybody, and kids in particular, needs to know that they are noticed and valued by the people at home and around them. Any kind of "how are you?" goes some way towards that. Instead, we need to find more specific things to ask, or use a question more likely to start a conversation and uncover any areas they may need help with. Here are six alternatives to "how was your day?".</p><p><strong>Did anything make you smile/laugh today?</strong> A good positive question to ask, which should get them talking about the better parts of their day. You can then springboard to ask if anything made them feel sad, or for which they need your help. </p><p><strong>Who did you sit with at lunch?</strong> This is a question with only one or two possible answers, so should be easy for your child to answer. You'll learn more about the people he or she hangs around with, which could lead to conversations about friendship.</p><p><strong>What's the best question of the day that teacher asked?</strong> This gets them thinking about one specific voice, that of their teacher. They should be able to recall at least one of the many questions raised in class, which will lead to a conversation about their school day and work. If "best" doesn't work, you may find that something else, like "toughest", "funniest" or "easiest" works better. You can then bounce off into new angles to find out more about their school life that day.</p><p><strong>What did you wish you did more of today?</strong> This is another great question for getting kids of all ages to tell you about the real highlights of their day. You can, of course, flip it to ask for what they wish they'd done less of.</p><p><strong>What songs did you listen to today?</strong> Bringing in other senses is often a good way to get a response. Music can be particularly important to children and teens, and may be a useful way to help them come out of their shell and talk. You can again adapt the question to "what book did you read?", or "what game did you play?", depending on the person and their passions.</p><p><strong>How is your day going to go?</strong> Instead of asking how was your day, you could try starting with something a bit more forward-looking. It's a bit easier to respond to than a question about the day just gone, as the child doesn't have a great number of possible subjects to talk about. They will instead mention the things they're either really looking forward to (maybe a game of football) or the things they're dreading (such as a particular lesson). Hopefully, they will respond enthusiastically, saying "we're gonna have a good day!" How can we make the most of summer to ensure we have a time we'll never forget? They tend to involve unusual experiences or situations that provoke the emotions (preferably positive ones). So to lay down the best summer memories, you need to do things that go a little beyond the norm.</p><h2 data-header-link="Making Holiday Memories">Making Holiday Memories</h2><p>For many families, the best summer memories are tied in with holidays or short trips. Almost by definition, holidays are a break from normal, generic life and a chance to visit new places and share novel experiences. Try to build the unusual into your trip. You're sure to have a pleasant time lazing on a beach, but how much more of a summer to remember would it be if you also have a go at snorkelling, donkey rides, boat trips, surfing, exploring a lighthouse or any of the more unusual experiences to be gathered at the seashore.</p><p>Similarly, you could try visiting the kinds of attraction <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/forget-the-beach-the-best-alternative-family-experiences-for-summer" target="_blank">you've not yet ventured to with the family</a>. How about a day on the farm, learning to ride a horse? Or an exhausting but rewarding afternoon fruit picking? If you've got older children, you could attempt to climb the three highest peaks in your area (even if they're just hills), or go wild swimming in a nearby lake. </p><h2 data-header-link="Keeping It Simple">Keeping It Simple</h2><p>That said, you don't have to travel far to surf the summer vibe. Long walks are wonderful (and cheap) ways to create memories. The simple action of moving around triggers parts of the brain that don't see much action when you're doing little more than sitting around the home. New sights, colours, smells and sounds all feed into the sensorium, building some of the most powerful summer memories. &nbsp;</p><p>Even time spent creatively in the garden can develop into the perfect summer's day. Play family games, or find an activity you wouldn't normally do, to set the day apart from the countless others you've played outside. But we also need to build up a bank of memories that go a little further. </p><p>Picture yourself, say, 20 years from now, when the kids are all grown up and perhaps moved away. How much would you give to be able to go back and visit that time, just for a few hours, and see them playing as children once again? You can't go back, but you remember summer days filled with joy, and that's the next best thing. The more shared, unusual, and remarkable experiences you enjoyed as a family, the more you'll have to look back on with misty eyes. </p><h2 data-header-link="Spark Their Curiosity">Spark Their Curiosity</h2><p>It works both ways, too. Offering a child a wide variety of experiences can be transformative. They're more likely to find something that sparks their imagination and leaves a lasting impression; not just a memory, but a fillip to their curiosity that leads them on to further adventures and experiences. </p><p>A child who grows up steeped in happy and varied activities with their family is likely to be more rounded and content than someone who spent their childhood mostly amusing themselves. Building happy summer memories in their early years will also bind them closer to the wider family as they enter their teens and adult years. We grow as a family through shared experiences. It's a win-win.</p><h2 data-header-link="How To Organise And Treasure Your Family Memories">How To Organise And Treasure Your Family Memories</h2><p>These days, we have no shortage of ways to capture memories. Almost everyone carries round a high resolution camera in their pocket, thanks to advances in mobile technology. We can even shoot lengthy videos, panoramas, slow-motion footage and timelapse - a miniature film studio that's ready to record at a second's notice.</p><p>But taking hundreds of snaps and hours of video footage is not enough. It's all too easy to leave our digital records sitting around in the cloud or on hard drives and forget what we have. You may be just one technology failure away from losing those precious images.</p><h2 data-header-link="Building Photo Books And Scrapbooks">Building Photo Books And Scrapbooks</h2><p>So, even in this digital age, it pays to move your favorite holiday snaps and other memories of summer into a more tangible home. Perhaps you could put together a vacation photo album or scrap book to forever bind and capture those precious summer vibes.</p><p>The very act of choosing the best images to print, and them sticking them into your travel photo album will be enough to cement those memories into your long-term recall. The selected summer memories will be reinforced every time you open the album. You're much more likely to browse a photo and relive those long-lost days if the image is in a properly labelled volume, as opposed to sitting within a memory bank with thousands of other images.</p><p>You can take this further still by getting the kids to <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/diy-family-photo-books" target="_blank">make their own DIY photo album</a>. This could be a simple repository for photographs, or could include scrapbook elements, such as rail tickets, wristbands and other flat objects that spark travel memories. You could even start a pictorial family diary to record everything you do over one summer - which could be quite time consuming, but is hard to beat as a way of collecting together summer memories.</p><p>Another option is to <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/do-you-remember-how-to-create-a-memory-tree-with-your-kids" target="_blank">create a memory tree</a>. This is a way to collate and show off memories from a specific event, such as a holiday, outing or birthday. The kids can draw the branches of a tree, then populate them with good memories in the form of photos, keepsakes and even drawings. </p><p>And then, of course, you could do things the really old fashioned way and ignore the digital camera. Instead get hold of an old film camera (processing centres are still surprisingly common), or a Polaroid camera that will print out photographs straight away. Many country destinations are within a short drive of town or city. Only around 20% of its area is built upon, while the remaining 80% is a mix of agricultural land, moorland, woods and other open spaces. Even big cities have plenty of countrified parts. London was recently designated a National Park City, in reflection that it covers an area that is almost 50% 'green and blue' (parks, gardens, woods, lakes, etc.).</p><p>The English countryside is a very safe and rewarding environment to explore. Walking has been something of a national pastime for centuries, and the country is crisscrossed with many well-marked footpaths. You won't get any strange looks for taking a hike across farmland or heath... so long as you stick to the designated footpaths.</p><p>Set amongst the rural and wild landscapes, the local villages are also a joy to visit. They often preserve many beautiful and ancient buildings whose like have long been lost in the big towns and cities. Many are well-geared up for walkers, and offer gift shops, supply stores and attractive cafes and pubs for refreshment.</p><p>All that said, it's important to respect the rural environment and always follow the 'countryside code'. There are currently 10: Broads, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Lake District, New Forest, Northumberland, North York Moors, Peak District, South Downs and Yorkshire Dales. </p><p>Visiting a national park gives you a guarantee of seeing some of England's most breathtaking landscapes, from the lofty heights of the Lake District to the largely manmade and low-lying Norfolk Broads. That said, any local village will have a shop where you can buy supplies and perhaps enjoy that particularly British pleasure of a relaxing meal in a country pub garden (kids usually welcome).</p><p>Waterproofs are another good idea. The English climate is notorious for sudden downpours and changeable weather, all the more so in recent years as the effects of global warming begin to be felt.</p><p>It's also a good idea to bring along nature guides. <p>The summer heat is a mixed blessing for families.</p><p>We all enjoy a day in the sun, but those balmy temperatures can also get uncomfortable. Keeping cool in summer heat is challenging enough, but getting the kids to sleep in a warm bed room can be even tougher.</p><p>Follow our tips on how to stay chilled in the heat, get to sleep when the temperature is high, and stay cool without air conditioning. Kids are especially prone to the effects of direct sunlight and high temperatures. If body temperature gets too hot, they're at risk of developing heat exhaustion. </p><p>Warning signs are dizziness, fatigue, headache and feeling faint. If you suspect your child is suffering heat exhaustion, get them somewhere cooler and give them plenty of water to drink. They should recover fairly quickly.</p><p>In extreme cases, heat exhaustion can develop into heat stroke. This is a much more serious condition in which a high body temperature can lead to organ damage, and is potentially fatal. </p><p>It's worth having a think about the different levels of protection your kids are getting from the heat. Sunscreen is not optional and should cover all exposed skin. Reapply after getting wet, even if using a 'water resistant' brand. Sun hats, shades and a shady place to cool off are also a good idea. Although it's tempting to strip off to swimwear in the heat, wear light clothing with a loose neck for better sun protection.</p><p>Kids and adults alike should also be drinking plenty of water to replace that lost through sweat, and to ward off heat stroke.</p><h2 data-header-link="How To Keep Your House Cool Without Air Conditioning">How To Keep Your House Cool Without Air Conditioning</h2><p>Air conditioning at home is common in the warmer states of the USA, but is less popular in Europe and other temperate regions. It's not an ideal solution for everybody. Units can take up precious space, are sometimes noisy, and are very power hungry. A central cooling unit typically draws as much energy as 15 fridges - not good for your energy bill, or the environment.</p><p>But if you don't have aircon, how can you stay cool on those sweltering summer days? Here are a few ideas to drop the temperature in your home.</p><h2 data-header-link="Open A Pair Of Windows">Open a pair of windows</h2><p>It sounds obvious, but there's a bit of a trick to opening windows. On a calm, windless day, having your windows open doesn't have much of an effect. If anything, it can let in warmer air and make your home all the hotter. The best option is to open only a couple of large windows, preferably in separate rooms. &nbsp;This should create a through-draft, with air blowing &nbsp;between rooms. It won't remove the heat, but the circulating air will feel more refreshing on your body.</p><h2 data-header-link="Partially Close Curtains Or Blinds To Block Out Direct Sunlight">Partially close curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight</h2><p>You have to be strategic here. If you fully close curtains, you'll block out much of the light and through-draft. But drawing them across by half or two-thirds should keep things bright and breezy while also blocking much of the sun's radiation. </p><h2 data-header-link="Invest In A Portable Fan Or Cooling Unit.">Invest in a portable fan or cooling unit. </h2><p>A halfway step to full air conditioning is to buy a smaller, less power-hungry device. Fans are not as effective, as they only push the hot air around and only in a small area. &nbsp;Portable cooling units can have a marked effect on a whole room and work by evaporation of water.</p><h2 data-header-link="Place A Damp Cloth Over Your Head">Place a damp cloth over your head</h2><p>It's not the most fetching look, but a moistened flannel or towel over the head or shoulders can work wonders on a hot day. The cooling effect is twofold. You get an immediate cold effect from the touch of cloth on the skin. Thereafter, steady evaporation helps to draw heat away from your body. </p><h2 data-header-link="If You Have Space, Consider Indoor Water Fountains">If you have space, consider indoor water fountains</h2><p>These have a cooling effect on the surrounding air, thanks again to evaporation. And you don't have to go big. Small indoor fountains no bigger than pot plants are now available to help you beat the heat. They're also a good idea for adding a focus to a room, and kids love them. </p><p>Make sure you use a system that cycles cold water, though, rather than continuously draining. If you have a dog or cat, you could also get a pet water fountain for outdoors.</p><h2 data-header-link="Take A Shower">Take a shower</h2><p>For a one-off burst of cool, take a low temperature shower. Leaving your hair wet will ensure you'll feel cooler for up to an hour. </p><h2 data-header-link="Wear Ice Packs On Your Body">Wear ice packs on your body</h2><p>Ice packs are readily available from supermarkets and other outlets. You simply store them in your freezer or ice box and take out when needed. They're chiefly intended for keeping food and drink cool, but there's no reason you can't use them to help with body temperature. You can't really beat ice cream for kids, though their health might suffer if you turn to them too regularly. Freeze fruit juice for simple, healthier ice lollies, or perhaps create a 'fruit kebab' to combine healthy eating with playfulness.</p><p>Frozen bananas or melon (perhaps dipped in chocolate) make exciting summer snacks on a hot day. Eat them neat, or use them to chill drinks. You can even eat frozen peas straight from the freeze box - it's not as weird as it sounds, and the bowl you place them in can also help spread the chill onto your skin. &nbsp;</p><p>It's particularly important to stay hydrated in the heat. Make sure that your kids drink lots of water throughout the day. They'll need it to replace the body sweat that a hot day produces in such abundance. So much outdoor water play equipment is available these days that those with gardens can have their own miniature splash parks. </p><p>That old favourite - the paddling pool - now comes in a <a href="https://kidadl.com/recommends/best-kids-paddling-pools" target="_blank">variety of shapes and sizes</a>. &nbsp;You can buy pools with built-in sun shade, pools specifically designed for infants or, conversely, ones that can fit in the entire family. It's even possible to find novelty inflatable pools with slides, or shaped like a pirate ship. </p><p>A more recent addition to the garden water park is the slip 'n' slide. This is a long sheet of plastic covered in a water layer from the garden hose - perfect for kids to slide along. These also come in a range of styles and sizes. They work best on a gentle slope, but can still be plenty of fun on the flat.</p><p>Another garden toy that'll help them stay cool is some form of play house. This could be anything from a full-blown treehouse to a cheap and simple play tent. Whatever you choose, this will give the kids a fun hideaway with guaranteed shade.</p><p>Then there's that other tradition for a hot day: the water fight. Pump your water pistols, prime those biodegradable water balloons and, please, try to avoid splashing mum and dad. You could even try building one of these <a href="https://kidadl.com/articles/diy-water-balloon-launchers-that-the-whole-family-will-love" target="_blank">DIY water balloon launchers</a> for an educational soaking.</p><p>You could also try playing games with ice cubes. You might also have fun filling a rubber glove with water, freezing it over night, then peeling it off to reveal an icy hand.</p><p>Not all splash games need to be played outside. You can also cool off around the house with one of these watery </p><h2 data-header-link="How To Stay Cool In The Car">How To Stay Cool In The Car</h2><p>Most cars these days have full air conditioning or air circulation systems, so staying cool isn't so challenging. For cars without air con, keep the temperature lower by keeping windows open where possible, and placing glare screens over the rear side windows (use transparent covers so as not to impede your view). </p><p>You could also give the kids hand-held electric fans to make sure they're keeping cool. And remember to carry plenty of drinking water. Park in the shade if you can, to keep the interior cool. If you're parking up for a few hours, consider the direction the sun will be taking when trying to find a shady spot.</p><h2 data-header-link="How To Keep Your Kids Cool At Night">How To Keep Your Kids Cool At Night</h2><p>Keeping the temperature down in the day can be a challenge, but how to stay cool at night can be even more so. We're all familiar with those restless warm nights amid sweat-soaked sheets. Getting to sleep can feel impossible.</p><p>If you don't have air con, then you still have options. A portable cooler in the bed room can work wonders, but the noise might be off-putting to kids. A slightly quieter (if still expensive) option is to have ceiling fans fitted and leave the windows open all night. Table-top fans are another option, though these can also be noisy. </p><p>A far cheaper (though less effective) idea is to use hot water bottles as cold water bottles. Fill them with chilled or even icy water and put them into the bed half an hour before bedtime. Your child can then place the bottle underneath their back or neck to feel the full benefit. The cooling effect will only last an hour or so, but it might be enough to ward off sweating and get the kids sleeping.</p><p>Likewise, you could also try the 'damp flannel on the head or chest' method mentioned previously to take the heat off. This will help them stay cool, but could also prevent them getting to sleep if it feels a bit weird.</p><p>What to wear and cover the kids with in bed is also important. Stick to the duvet and they'll be sweating the night away. Instead use a thin cotton sheet, or no sheet at all if they're comfortable with that. Pyjamas should be traded for simple shorts and vest.</p><p>Finally, instead of fighting the temperatures you could use them to your advantage. If you have a garden or balcony, you could use the opportunity to make your bed outdoors. Either pitch a tent or, if there's zero chance of rain, sleep directly under the stars. <p>Along with 'what's the weather like today?' and 'where can I buy the best ice cream?' this has to be one of the most Googled questions over the summer.</p><p>But just how do you keep your paddling pool fresh and clean without resorting to changing the water daily? We'll let you into a few secrets with some top tips for maintaining the water quality.</p><p>First, you should understand more about the water in your paddling pool in your quest for fresh dipping. Over time it will absorb carbon dioxide and this, combined with any 'accidents' children may have, will turn your water acidic. The more acidic the water, the higher its pH level, and the higher the pH level the more likely it is that algae will appear. In short, paddling pools make for ideal conditions for algae to grow, as well as bacteria which can be harmful. Also, be mindful that anyone who later comes down with diarrhoea or vomiting could have easily transmitted their germs to others who were sharing the pool. </p><p>But this doesn't have to put the brakes on your summer fun. The easiest method is to use chlorine tablets along with a floating basket – but this should be removed whenever someone is in the swimming pool. Always carefully read the manufacturer's instructions and only use in quantities that are suitable for the size of the pool. You can also use pH testing strips to ensure you're reaching the right balance – which should be between 7.2-7.8. This method is best suited to a swimming pool or larger paddling pools. </p><h2 data-header-link="The Simple Ingredients Method">The Simple Ingredients Method</h2><p>We love this tip from Dri Pak which uses basic ingredients you can find in the supermarket and should maintain the contents of your pool for up to 2 weeks! It's also a safe option for little ones – though of course they shouldn't be swallowing the pool water and should shower after playing in it. The brand of steriliser is specified because of its strength, so stick to this brand to ensure you are cleaning safely. The bicarbonate of soda is added a week later to bring the pH level of the pool to one that won't break down the sterilising fluid. Don't be tempted to switch the bicarbonate for baking soda as it won't give the same effect. When it is time to change the water it will be perfectly safe to use it to water your garden too.</p><p><strong>You Need:</strong></p><p>Sainsbury's Little Ones Steriliser Fluid</p><p>Bicarbonate of soda</p><p><strong>Step One: </strong>First work out your paddling pool capacity, this should be listed on the box. You'll need this number to work out the number of ingredients to use – never guesstimate this, using the wrong proportions can be harmful.</p><p><strong>Step Two: </strong>Add 2.5 millilitres of the steriliser fluid for every 100 litres of water you add to the pool.</p><p><strong>Step Three:</strong> A week later, add 50 grams of bicarbonate of soda for every 100 litres of water you originally placed in the pool. Mix well. Then add the same amount of steriliser fluid as you used in step one again.</p><h2 data-header-link="The Fitted Sheet Method">The Fitted Sheet Method</h2><p>If you just want your paddling pool water to last for a few days then your main concern is likely to be stray leaves and bugs falling into it. There's a simple trick to keep your paddling pool water free from unwanted guests using a fitted sheet. The size of your paddling pool will determine the size of the sheet you need, but once kids have finished using the pool simply stretch the sheet over the top. When you arrive on set, you will usually be taken through to the studio or shown where to wait (hopefully a nice room with refreshments provided!), or you may be taken straight through to hair and make-up for styling. </p><p>2. It's a good idea to bring some entertainment for you and the kids just in case you end up waiting around. Pack books, iPads, headphones, and lots of snacks just in case they aren't provided. Some children even do their homework in between shots. </p><p>3. You might not get introduced to everyone on set but generally there is a fun and friendly vibe on shoots for kids. The team is usually made up of, the hair stylist, make-up artist, photographer, their assistant, the director, stylist, and sometimes a few other assistants and editors and maybe interns too depending on the client. &nbsp;</p><p>4. With child modeling, the makeup will be minimal. Usually, it is just a case of enhancing natural features and hiding any little blemishes or dark circles. Child models are definitely expected to look like kids so don't worry about false eyelashes or hair extensions, if there's something you are unhappy about you can always let the stylist know.<strong> </strong></p><p>5. Parents are expected to be on set, and you might even be brought in to help by encouraging your child to smile or laugh. Some photographers prefer parents to be out of sight so they can 'get the shot', this comes down to whatever you and your child are comfortable with, don't ever feel like you have to leave the room altogether if you don't want to, a good photographer can capture a great image no matter what. </p><h2 data-header-link="Are There Any Negatives?">Are There Any Negatives? </h2><p>6. There can be a lot of waiting around on set. Sometimes you will get to a shoot and you are in and out in a flash but other days you can be waiting around quite a bit, which can be super boring for kids. Make sure to bring some things to do just in case.</p><p>7. Child modeling is a competitive industry. Your agency might be checking your availability all the time but not actually booking your child for shoots. Quiet periods with modeling can happen a lot, but the busy periods often make up for them! It all depends on what clients are looking for at the time. </p><p>8. Sometimes child fashion models can come with a certain type of parent, and if your child is successful it is easy to get swept up in the excitement! Your child is more likely to build good relationships with casting directors and others in the industry if they have a relaxed parent with them on shoots. Our behavior as parents is being noted as much as that of the child, believe it or not.</p><p>9. Due to the nature of the industry, there is a risk of rejection, in fact, it is pretty much inevitable! It can be frustrating if your child doesn't land a job you know they'd be perfect for, but try not to take it to heart. One of the main things agencies are asked to send over with castings to clients is a list of heights, often it's less about the overall look of the model and more, will they fit into this very specific size of clothing! </p><h2 data-header-link="How Do You Get Into Child Modeling?">How Do You Get Into Child Modeling?<strong> </strong></h2><p>10. If you think child modeling sounds like something your child will enjoy, the first thing to do is some major research into child modeling agencies. Check out the top child modeling sites and talent agencies and see which would be a good fit for your family, look at their clients, the types of kids they represent, and look for the overall feel. Don't be afraid to email or call and ask questions before you decide who to apply to, the more information the better. </p><p>11. Child modeling agents take a cut of the fee from the client, but they shouldn't be asking for any money directly from you. All reputable agencies will cover any admin fees and if they want professional headshots, they should organize these. More often with child and toddler modeling, agencies are happy to use photos you send in yourself at first until your child has actually done their first shoot, then they can just use these images for their portfolio and model card. </p><p>12. Be very wary of anyone approaching you directly claiming to be from an agency, this usually happens via social media. Model agencies rarely, if ever scout models this way, enough parents will apply directly with their kids or attend open castings, so it's best to ignore anything like this and go directly to an agency that you know is legit.</p><p>13. When you have found an agency that ticks all the boxes, you can usually apply by sending in some photos. Some agencies hold open castings so look out for any advertisements and sign up for their newsletter if they have one. An open casting involves going along to the agency or a studio, where you can meet the agents. They will take a few quick photos of your child so this is a great way for them (and you) to see how they would do on a photo shoot. </p><p>14. If you are applying directly to the agency, you will need to send some clear photos of your child over for them to look at. You don't need any fancy equipment, photos from a decent phone camera will be fine. Good natural lighting is a must, hair loose and in its natural state (not straightened, braids and similar protective styles are fine), simple plain colored clothes and minimal accessories, no hats and you are good to go! Depending on the age of your child, headshots at home can be a little tricky but you can make it fun! Take tons of photos making all sorts of silly faces, but try to capture the 'in between' moments, so you get a variety of expressions. Don't edit the photos at all, the agency will want to see completely natural shots. </p><p>15. The agency will usually let you know within a few weeks if they would like to sign your child. Remember though that they get hundreds of applications a week so don't worry if you don't hear back right away. Also, if you don't get your first pick of agency, you can always apply to more as you never know what they will be looking for and it varies from agency to agency. So if you believe your child has what it takes, don't be dispirited! </p><p>16. Before you move forward with child modeling, you need to be sure this is something that your child is going to enjoy. Shy children will struggle in this industry. If your child loves being the center of attention, loves dressing up and getting their picture taken, then they will probably love being a child model. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, as parents it's also nice to chat with others in the industry who know what it's like, not to mention you can compare notes on who you've worked with.</p><p>19. Having amazing professional photos of your child is a wonderful perk, they are being captured at all these memorable ages by the best in the business. You won't usually get sent the photos directly but once they go live, agencies can often obtain copies and they will send them to you too. </p><p>20. If you know the images of your child are going to be used in-store, pop in and ask the manager when the displays will be getting changed and let them know you'd love to take the prints home! Often these images are on huge canvases which can be fun to keep, smaller display prints look great up on the wall too. </p><p>21. Child models can also earn some serious money towards their savings. Rates vary from job to job but reputable agencies will push for the best rates every time. Occasionally you may be asked if you'd like to take on a job that pays less but could be for an amazing editorial in a magazine or an up-and-coming brand. Those shots will really boost your child's model portfolio, so you can decide at the time but you don't have to accept every job. </p><p>22. Generally speaking, child models can make between $25 and $75 an hour for catalog and magazine shoots, while working on an advertisement or commercial the rates shoot right up, and you'll be looking at between $475 to over $1000 a day. The highest-paid child model is likely to be one who excels at commercial or advertising modeling. A lot depends on what the images are going to be used for, and for how long, your agency will be able to let you know all the details before the shoot. </p><p>23. If your child ends up really loving modeling, this can be a great career stepping stone for them. They will be getting to meet all sorts of casting directors, photographers, stylists, and other professional industry types so you really can build up quite the network. </p><h2 data-header-link="Is It Worth It?">Is It Worth It? </h2><p>24. There are a lot of pros to child and baby modeling, but only you and your child can really decide if it's all worth it. If you have been to a few shoots, and it's not as fun as you expected then there's no need to carry on, many children will just model for a little while before deciding their other hobbies need to come first and that's completely fine. </p><p>25. One of the main downsides of modeling is all the waiting around, kids notoriously do not enjoy that! Parents also need to be very flexible as shoots are often midweek and you need to travel, so if you have a demanding full-time job then this probably isn't something you can commit to. Many agencies do try to be mindful of school and working hours and try to shoot on weekends and in school holidays, but it's not always the case. </p><p>26. There is a chance that your child could feel a sense of pressure to perform and be 'on' all the time, as they take in the happy reaction of the people around them on shoots when they project a bigger personality on camera, they can feel that this is expected of them all the time. This can be avoided by keeping modeling as more of a hobby, not something you are doing too often, and making sure your child knows they can be themselves all the time, no one is expecting them to be perfect. </p><p>27. You do need to consider the future too, with social media and the internet, these photos could be around for a very long time. Of course, we as parents will probably love the photos but in the future, your child might not. Hopefully, they will look back fondly at their modeling days but you never know. </p><p>28. Child modeling can be great life experience<strong>. </strong>Your child will be learning social skills, building their confidence and self-esteem, and it can also teach them to have a good work ethic. Packing light will make things easier for everyone. That said, there are number of beach necessities that should be on a beach day packing list.</p><p><strong>Sunscreen</strong> is perhaps the most important. Even on cloudy days, prolonged exposure can be dangerous. Remember to reapply sunscreen after taking a swim or paddling in the water.</p><p><strong>Drinking water</strong> is the other big essential. Sitting in the sun, or shade, can be thirsty work on a hot day, all the more so if the kids are running around our frolicking in the sea. </p><p>The traditional <strong>bucket and spade</strong> are another must-have item; not just for making sandcastles, but also for collecting shells and other beach collectibles.</p><p>A <strong>towel</strong> or three is also essential. You'll want to lie on them, use them to dry off, and they're also useful for brushing down sandy limbs.</p><p>You'll probably want to take along some <strong>food</strong>. Most beach resorts will have refreshment stands, but you can avoid queues and costs by bringing your own picnic. Select foods that are easy to eat without the benefit of tables or cutlery, like pastries, fruit and corn snacks. </p><p>Those are the absolute essentials. Other popular items to take include:</p><p><strong>Wet wipes and hand sanitiser</strong> are invaluable for cleaning up mucky paws ahead of eating.</p><p>A <strong>sun shade or wind break</strong> to protect you from the elements. That might not be your kids' top choice for a day on the beach. They'll want to explore, splash around and look for sea creatures. With good quality sand, you don't even need a bucket and spade. Simply pile and sculpt, then decorate with shells and seaweed.</p><p><strong>King Canute</strong>: Pretend to be the king who ordered the tide to recede. In this popular game, you have to see how far out you can scamper before the waves touch your feet. Place a stick or other marker as far out as you can, then try to beat it.</p><p><strong>Under siege</strong>: This is a fun game to play if the tide is coming in. Build a sandcastle close to the water's edge, then try to protect it from the incoming ocean with a series of trenches and dams. You can get by with very little planning, but if you think a little ahead about what you're going to put in your basket, then you can relieve a lot of the stress from a picnic day.</p><p>Below, we've set out some of the best picnic ideas for kids, including the perfect foods to take, things to bring on a picnic, and fun picnic activities. Have a great summer!</p><p>‍</p><h2 data-header-link="What Picnic Food To Pack">What Picnic Food To Pack</h2><p>The simple, honest, yet unsatisfying answer is "anything you enjoy". But for family picnics, there are two golden rules that make everything run more smoothly. </p><p>First, &nbsp;go for quick and easy wins. There's no point slaving away in the kitchen for hours on magnificent quiche recipes or an intricate salad that the kids won't touch. Often, the simple, easy-to-prepare ideas are the best.</p><p>Second, focus on foods that are easy to eat and won't create too much mess. Remember, we're talking about kids here. A luxuriant chocolate gateau might seem like fun, but it's going to get smeared everywhere.</p><p>Sandwiches are, of course, a sure-fire winner; quick to prepare, wholesome, universally liked and practically a meal in themselves. But you can get more creative by branching out into other types of finger food. Shop-bought pastries like pork pies, Cornish pasties, samosas and sausage rolls need no preparation, and make for mess-free finger food.</p><p>Salads can be a good, healthy option, so long as your family are likely to eat them. If we're being honest, it's the item most often wasted at barbecues and picnics. It provides some protection from ground-based insects such as ants and serves as a focus for the picnic. </p><p>Plastic plates, tumblers and cutlery always come in useful, even if you think you can get away with eating from packets and wrappings.</p><p>Sunblock is essential in summer, even if the skies are overcast. Don't forget shades, hats and possibly the sun umbrella, too.</p><p>Take insect spray if you're going to be in an environment with mosquitos.</p><p>Basking in the sunshine eating food might seem like an end in itself, but kids always need more entertainment. Throw a jack ball out onto the grass, then see how close the kids can get to hitting it. This can be done with a proper boules set, or improvise with stones or other small objects. </p><p>Catch and throw toys. Supermarkets are full of outdoor toys ideal for a family picnic. Look out for velcro catch mitts, variations on the flying disc, discs that turn into balls and juggling toys (a picnic is a great place to learn).</p><p>A teddy bears' picnic is a classic part of the family picnic. <p>Seaside holidays might get all the press but you’re likely to find yourself sharing space with hundreds of other families. Pick a quiet place in the countryside, however, and you could have hundreds of acres of rural landscape almost entirely to yourself. The options on where to go are legion -- just find an under-explored corner of the country and you’ll readily find accommodation listed online. But what should you take and what can you actually do in the countryside?</p><h2 data-header-link="What You’ll Need">What You’ll Need</h2><p>If you’re staying in a holiday cottage, or something similar, then you can pretty much pack as though you were travelling to a hotel. But be sure to check what’s included with the accommodation owner. For example, most places will supply stuff like plates, pans, cutlery and glassware, but not everywhere will offer towels. Some may have cots available on request while others will expect you to take a travel cot. Think of everything your family will need, and make sure it’s either packed or on the ‘supplied’ list.</p><p>You’ll want to do plenty of exploring during your stay, so pack a few items to make that more fun and pleasurable. A good map is essential. While most rural areas now have decent phone and GPS coverage, you’re guaranteed to hit a black spot at the very moment you find yourself lost. OS maps show public footpaths that might be absent from apps and online maps. Plus, it’s both fun and educational for kids to follow a paper map.</p><p>Make sure everyone’s got a good water bottle. Places to refill or buy can be hard to come by when out and about in the countryside, especially with many small businesses struggling to reopen in the wake of coronavirus.&nbsp;</p><p>Insect spray, suncream and a first aid kit are also advisable contents of any hiker’s rucksack. What else you take depends on your spirit of adventure. Binoculars, wildlife guides, a compass… just remember you have to carry all this stuff.&nbsp;</p><p>What you might <em>not</em> need to take is entertainment. Almost any holiday cottage will come loaded with rainy day stuff… books, DVDs, board games, plain old television. Again, check ahead to be sure. Not every holiday home will have internet access… which might be a good thing if you want a break from the screen.</p><p>Food is rarely an issue. Most accommodation will provide information on local shops and supermarkets that do delivery. But it wouldn’t hurt to check out the local resources online, ahead of the holiday.</p><h2 data-header-link="What To Do">What To Do</h2><p>You’re in the middle of the countryside with your family. What can you do? Who can find and photograph three types of mushroom? How many species of bird or butterfly can you spot in one day? Or prepare a ‘bingo card’ of 15 things they have to look out for while out.</p><p><strong>Explore the local area</strong>: Most holiday homes come with a teetering pile of leaflets advertising local attractions. Make the most of them -- though be sure to check ahead to ensure the venue has reopened.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Get stuck in to farm work</strong>: Some smaller farms offer working farm holidays, during which you and the kids can get properly stuck into the rural life, helping out with animal feeding and other farm tasks. The numbers seem to have diminished in the wake of coronavirus, but some are still operating.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Trapped indoors?&nbsp;</strong>Of course, you might get unlucky and hit a week full of rain. Everybody would like Britain’s green and pleasant lands to be open to those who want to explore. But it’s important to remember that much of the countryside is also a workplace. Whenever we walk through rural areas, we should be mindful and respectful to both the natural world, and the working rural world. To help, the Countryside Code sets out the dos and don’ts of taking your family out of the town.<br></p><p>* Always leave gates as you find them. Usually, they should be closed, but a gate may have been left open for a reason.</p><p>* Stick to designated footpaths (marked on OS maps and many mapping apps). Don’t go off the track unless a notice says you can. This is especially important when walking beside or through crop fields.</p><p>* Leave no trace of your visit, and take all litter home.</p><p>* Never touch or feed livestock (unless you’re with the farmer). If an animal appears to be in distress, contact a farmer rather than trying to intervene yourself.</p><p>* Give animals plenty of space, especially if they have young, or if you have a dog (see below).</p><p>* Cycling? By law, you have to give way to walkers and those on horses.</p><p>* Plan ahead. Be sure to check ahead before turning up with fido.&nbsp;</p><p>While out and about, dogs should be kept under control, especially in areas containing livestock. This is not just good practice, but the law. Dogs must be on short leads in the open country between 1 March 1 and 31 July 31 (a law designed to help nesting birds), and always when around farm animals. Dogs that injure or harass livestock are at the mercy of the law, and could be put down.</p><p>You’ll also need to consider the poo. It’s very important to clear up any mess to avoid spreading disease (look up Neosporosis, though not while you’re eating your lunch). Make sure you’ve brought some kind of sealable container in which to carry the smelly deposits. Unlike your local park, the open countryside does not always contain bins for dog mess. You may need to carry the feculent package some distance, so have a good think about how best to do that in a safe and sanitary way.</p><h2 data-header-link="Driving?">Driving?</h2><p>The rules of the road are exactly the same in the countryside as in a city centre. However, rural areas throw up all kinds of hazards you wouldn’t encounter on the North Circular. If you’ve never driven in the countryside before, it pays to think ahead and consider the following situations.</p><p><strong>Narrow roads</strong>: Many rural roads are narrow; not much wider than a single vehicle. Keep your speed down, especially when approaching bends. Look ahead and try to spot the next passing point -- a short section where it’s possible to pull in and let oncoming traffic pass.</p><p><strong>Scratchy, bumpy roads</strong>: If you’re lucky enough to drive a sleek, expensive sports car, you might want to leave it at home. Roads in the countryside are often bumpy, pothole-filled, waterlogged or otherwise out of peak condition. You might also consider your options if you’re precious about your car’s paintwork. The narrow tracks can force you tight against hedges. Rub a hawthorn at speed, and you’re going to see scratches.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Other road users</strong>: Few country roads have paving for walkers, and many lack even a grassy verge. Walkers will commonly take to the road. Keep this in mind when you go around every corner, and slow to a crawl on the tightest bends. Likewise, cyclists and horse riders make good use of rural roads, and should be given as much space as possible. Drive particularly slowly near horses, and look out for manure on the road as a sign they might be ahead. Never try to overtake anywhere near a bend.</p><p><strong>Tractors</strong>: It goes without saying that you’re likely to encounter rural vehicles in the countryside. Have patience if you find yourself behind a slow-moving tractor -- they usually don’t travel very far before turning off again. Watch out, too, for vehicles pulling out of farm tracks. Most turnings will be signposted with a ‘Concealed entrance’ hazard warning, but not always.</p><p><strong>Animals in the road</strong>: Look out for animals in the road. Hundreds of people are injured in the UK each year following collisions with animals, and a handful of deaths also sadly occur. You never know what you might meet. Pheasants, deer, sheep, badgers, foxes… all come and go at their own whim. Drive cautiously, paying particular attention after warning roadsigns. If you do hit an animal, whether it is killed or injured, you may have a legal obligation to report the incident to the police. This applies for dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and mules. Cats are, for some reason, not on the list, though you may want to do the decent thing and check if the stricken animal has a contact number on its collar.</p><p><strong>Driving at night</strong>: Use full-beam headlights on country roads. You won’t find many street lights, and you’ll need all the illumination you can get to spot the hazards noted above. Remember to dip the lights when approaching an oncoming car so as not to dazzle the driver.</p><h2 data-header-link="Do It The Easy Way">Do It The Easy Way</h2><p>Finally, if the idea of a full-on countryside holiday still seems a little daunting, then consider a compromise closer to home. Glamping is always an option, with many semi-rural sites across the UK that are comfortably close to towns and cities. Some of these can be enormous fun, too. How about glamping in a <a href="https://www.kidadl.com/articles/unusual-family-holidays-uk">converted double-decker, or a UFO, or even a helicopter</a>?</p>

Wild swimming is an increasingly popular activity, and most regions have plenty of lakes and rivers where swimming is encouraged. </p><p>Some places even have lifeguards and changing rooms to make things easier. You can always stick to paddling in the shallows if a full swim feels too daunting. Depending where you live, it might even be possible to swim up close with wildlife. The US alone has 63 National Parks, including the famous Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. </p><p>The UK has 10, and recently moved to make London the world's first National Park City thanks to its surprisingly high tree coverage. These varied terrains make exceptional and highly memorable places to visit. Plus, the professional set-up means you'll get a taste of the rugged wild with plenty of facilities at hand. State Parks offer something very similar, but are managed at a state rather than federal level. </p><h2 data-header-link="Family Hiking">Family Hiking</h2><p>What if you live a long way from a National Park? Well, there's nothing to stop you going for kid friendly hikes in other parts of the country. Depending where you live, a lush, expansive forest may or may not be on the doorstep. But it's worth the journey. It's a chance to get close to livestock, watch agricultural machinery in action and, often, view some eccentrically large vegetables.
